TriBeCa Film Festival in New York
From the 18th to the 29 of April in New York the TriBeCa Film Festival XI, will take place. During those days, movie theaters, outdoor venues and other venues will be open to present cinema in all its versions and formats, along with the initial idea of giving life and movement to Manhattan through the creation of cinema. The TriBeCa Film Festival was born in 2002 as a cultural response to the attacks on the Twin Towers. Its creators, Robert De Niro and Jane Rosenthal, had the idea to make this festival an invigorating mechanism against depression and the fear that affected the community of lower Manhattan and New York, specifically the TriBeCa neighborhood. The aim of the Festival is to allow New Yorkers and national and international film communities to enjoy and understand during several days the importance of film in society. This year nearly 70 films, of a selection from over two thousand andeight entries, will compete for prizes at the festival for a value of over $ 180 000. Twelve productions for the “World Narrative Competition” were selected, six are American and six are international productions. The festival director Sharon Badal told reporters that this year there will be dramas and comedies that deal with problems in various parts of the world, so it will be a great festival with lots of emergent film representation. Among the films competing in the World Narrative Competition Argentina´s comedy “The fate in your hands”, directed by Daniel Burman, who made the film “Lost Embrace” will be presented. This film will be released in the international section of the Festival....Lana del Rey: Career Beginnings in New York
Lana del Rey is the latest pop phenomenon. A stunning beauty with a a contralto register voice full of sensuality, along with great lip surgery and the retro style of a movie actress of the 50´s, Lana del Rey comes straight out of an erotic fantasy of detectives and criminals in New York . This young singer was born on June 21 in NYC 26 years ago, and lived her early years in Lake Placid. After she returned to the Big Apple to study at Fordham University, Lana started to sing in clubs and bars in New York, particularly in the “hipster” neighborhood of Williamsburg inBrooklyn. Her voice certainly captivated many and led her to gain popularity and even sign with an independent label of which she was the only artist. Unfortunately, the label disappeared before editing her songs. Before being Lana del Rey, and the controversial lip operation, Lana used the name Lizzy Grant, and released an EP called “Kill, Kill” in 2008. Since then she outlined her particular style, as well as her videos, a mix of kitsch romantic and unconnected images with her singing in the background and appearing indiscreetly and sensually to the rhythm of the music. It would take four years for Lizzy to become Lana , and captivate the attention of a transnational label, Interscope, which released her first LP, “Born to Die”, on 31 January this year. “Born to Die” is an album that captivates and entertains but leaves us with some doubts, especially at production level, which at times feels reminiscent of the best “femme pop” , but at others lowers...Origin and history of the Dreamcatcher
The tale tells us that Iktomi, the joking master of knowledge, appeared in front of Lakota, the old spiritual leader, in the shape of a spider, and then he began talking about weaving a web, a spider web, on a willow hoop with feathers and horse hair. Once he´d finished he gave it to old Lakota and told him: “The spider web is a perfect circle, but in the middle there´s a hole, use to to help yourself and your people. If you believe in the Great Spirit, the spider web will trap your ideas and the bad ones will disappear through the hole”. Old Lakota showed it to his people, the Sioux indians, and these began to use it as a net for their life. They believe that the dreamcatcher held their future destiny and they hung it over their beds. The nightmares escaped through the hole in the middle of the net, not being part of their dreams anymore, while the good dreams remained in the web of life. Etymologically, the word ´dreamcatcher´ comes from native American culture, ihá?bla gmunka in Lakota language, which is the Siouan language that was spoken by Lakota´s people in the Sioux tribes. Meanwhile, in Ojibwe, the indian language that belonged to the Algonquian languages, asabikeshiinh is the inanimate form of the word spider and bawaajige nagwaagan means trap for dreams. It´s an object generally made by hand with a willow hoop in which they knit a big web. It´s decorated with sacred and personal objects, such as feathers and other items. The dreamcatchers are one of the most fascinating traditions of native American indians. Its origin goes back...Baseball, The New York Yankees
On the 13th of April the baseball season will start with a classic game: The New York Yankees vs. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim at the Yankee Stadium in New York. Tickets are on sale now, and their prices rage between $ 77 and $ 91 depending of the selected seat. The expected game is part of the sporting traditions New Yorkers have, which is an interesting activity that could help you to understand the culture behind American sporting events. We must take into account that for New Yorkers, baseball is the most popular sport and its season generates huge expectations. New York is one of the metropolitan areas of the United States that have two baseball teams; others are Los Angeles, Washington and Chicago. The two city teams are the Yankees and the Mets, both of them have a huge rivalry that makes their games something really memorable, because it unleashes a veritable war of opinions and forecasts that generates a highly confrontational environment. The Yankees have won 26 titles and the Mets have done so only twice. Not only the games capture the attention of supporters, there are also cultural activities that create a cheerful environment before the games start; people like eating whatever is on sale while watching the guest artists. The Yankee Stadium in New York is located in a huge area of the Bronx. The name of the New York Yankees dates from 1913, before that the team had had the name of the franchise purchased by Frank Farrell and Bill Devery, the Baltimore Orioles. In 1903 it was renamed as the Highlanders, and...Jekyll & Hyde: Horror Restaurant in New York
For New Yorkers, life has to constantly be full of surprises because the demands of a great city have to be soothed with experimentation of thrills and fun. Looking for places that had that ludic and open atmosphere towards experimentation, the prestigious newspaper New York Times found an incredible bar-restaurant, and we´ll tell you all about it so you can visit it during your stay. We´re talking about the theme bar-restaurant Jekyll & Hyde. Even though everyone knows it´s fiction, inside everything is abnormal, creep and the ideal place for those who enjoy thrills during dinner or while having some drinks with friends. As the New York Times says, this place “offers an atmosphere similar to a theme park”, because the walls move and they seem to close around you, the portraits also move or seem to be watching you, all of this keeping the diners in a permanent state of suspense that elevates one´s alert senses. It´s very funny to see the waiters dressed in costumes from the late 1800s and Mr. Jekyll becoming Mr. Hyde. These games keep your mind occupied in the atmosphere and not on the food or drink. The menu has 62 different dishes and the names of the dish are like Create your own Monster or Frankenstein Burger, which has cheese, bacon, mushrooms and onion. Also, there´s The Mummy with steak and different cheeses to choose from. There are also pizzas with names that follow the line of famous monsters. For children from 10 years old, there are special menus at lunchtime, such as Dr. Jekyll Pizza. They enjoy it because it´s full of...Occupy Wall Street in New York
Just hours after the confirmation of the death of Whitney Houston by the media and social networks, Sony, her record label who was in preparations of new releases by the singer, rose considerably the price of mp3´ of the artist. So, Sony inadvertently showed us once again the mask used by the American music industry to continue benefiting from their artists without the slightest hesitation or consideration. Nothing could be more alarming. Immediately, the voices of many were felt in Facebook and Twitter. Thus, the music industry reveals its intentions with any artist: to exhaust it and consume it in its totality, even after his or her death. The phenomenon is not new. Much thought should be given after the death of Amy Winehouse and Michael Jackson. Stars caught in the pop nets shine until they stop shining. Whitney Houston´s death comes at a highly controversial moment both for social networking and for artists. Laws like SOUP and ACTA, seek only to control the flow of information in the network, under the pretext of protecting copyright in both the U.S. and Europe. These laws are nothing more than the efforts of repressive governments to keep internet users under control, while trying to erroneously prove that social networks actually are dangerous to the system. Today, if you´re a Twitter user or a Facebook one, you have the ability to send, re-send and report information in real time all over the world, and with these texts, images and questions, criticize, speak out and join multiple causes. Occupy Wall Street movement, thus, has been calling thousands of people and continues to do...Museo del Barrio en Nueva York
The activity of the Latino community in New York is intense. Undoubtedly, Latin Americans have a major presence within the United States in general, and especially in a city like New York, which has always been a benchmark for continuing migration to the United States. New York gathered Latin Americans from all latitudes like, Colombia, Venezuela, Bolivia, Peru, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic and Cuba, among many others coming from Spanish-speaking countries. Several generations of Latin Americans have made the city of New York their own city. And in New York, nationalities and races mingle, coexist and merge. Of course there are some tensions and frictions between communities, however, the “political correctness” characteristic of a city like New York makes the coexistence among Hispanics, Jews, Chinese, black, white, green, blue, and all colors possible, for a particular affection for the city itself, that binds and becomes part of a genuine cosmopolitan and modern. Speaking of Latino culture in New York would be like touring around many readings, songs and infinite dances. Many Latin American artists made and make New York their home and center their creation to the world. Undoubtedly, despite the global economic crisis, New York remains to be a major center of art trade, offering countless galleries and museums that serve as windows for new artists to the world. Similarly, as part of a general trend, many museums focus on rescuing the work recently carried out in countries that have resulted from the colonies of the West. It should be however noted, that the Museo del Barrio has an undeniable importance in the dissemination of Latin American...Outlets in New York
