El oso y el madroño

The coat of arms of the city of Madrid, since 1967 is a bear that tries to get up an arbutus to eat its red fruits and hence the importance if this symbol of Madrid.

 

There´s a statue located in the centre of the city which represents this bear crawling up the arbutus and it´s very famous and visited by all the tourists that go through Madrid. The author of the sculpture is Antonio Navarro Santafé, and was inaugurated in the second half of the 20th century, when the government of the city decided that this would be the symbol that represented the city from then onwards.

 

It´s situated to a side of the Puerta del Sol square and it represents its heraldic arms, symbol of the city. Today, every product produced by the city of Madrid must have the badge of el oso y el madroño.

 

The big statue is 4 metres tall, weighs more than 20 tons and is made out of stone and bronze.
