Since it was first held in 1985, Rock in Rio has managed to become the macrofestival pop-rock par excellence. Although there are many events like it spread around the whole world it has no equal in quality, capacity and organizational solvency, and to such an extension that, given the tremendous impact they have had successive editions in Brazil, its organizer, the entrepreneur Roberto Medina, exported the formula to other countries (Spain, Argentina, Peru and Portugal).
The first edition of the Rock in Rio-Lisbon took place in 2004, maintaining the same structure as the one in Brazil: a whole gigantic Rock City, with an area of over 200,000 m², equipped with a large central stage and several tents in which different artists perform simultaneously their music. One of the great attractions of this edition constitutes, no doubt, the fact of being located in what in other times would have called “a unique setting,” and today, simply, a magical city, full of charm, history, poetry. Walking through its streets, visit its cafes, its ancient tram ride before or after attending a concert in Rock in Rio, is not something that can be done elsewhere: only here in Portugal, in Lisbon.
The appointment of Rock in Rio Lisbon has been repeated every two years, and we can say that 2012 edition will delight the spectators who come to the site with performances by front line artists, particularly on the 25th and 26th of May and from the 1st to the 3rd of June. Among them, we should mention Bruce Springsteen with his E-Street Band, Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, The Offspring and Limp Bizkit. It also holds the great Rock Street festival, where all the street performers who wish may participate to raise awareness of the audience with their creations of art, music and urban dance.
However, one of the most anticipated performances is by Linkin Park, which are about to release their fifth studio album and have returned to the road after two years of silence following the publication of “Minutes To Midnight” (2007) and “A Thousand Suns” (2010). Although the new album named “Living Things” will not be published until the 25th of June , the lucky attendees at the World Rock in Rio Lisbon will hear the new songs as well as its debut single, “Burn it down” (in the YouTube video below). Speaking to MTV, lead singer, Chester Bennington said that on this record have integrated “high-energy and intense electronic melodies” that are present in the latest trends in pop-rock.
No music lover should pass up the chance to hear these new songs in the format in which music tastes better: live, performed by its creators, without intermediaries, bare-chested. The date is May 26, yes, in Lisbon. I attach the official link where you can find more information: http://rockinriolisboa.sapo.pt/
And remember to leave apartments in Lisbon reserved in advance, that the city is packed these days.
