The Spada Gallery is one of the most beautiful art-related places in Rome and it has some of the most important collections of the so-called Old Masters. It´s located in the district called Regola, close to the Palazzo Farnese and its gardens also have a beautiful view of the River Tiber.
The collections that you can enjoy in its corridors were recollected originally by the Cardinal Bernardino Spada (hence its name) during the 17th century, by his brother Virgilio Spada and by his nephew the Cardinal Fabrizio Spada.
Originally the place was built in 1540 by order of the Cardinal Girolamo Capodiferro and the architect that was in charge of the designs was Casale Monferrato.
Today the gallery has works by some of the most important artists of the history of art like Caravaggio, Guercino, Bruegel and Domenichino among many others. And despite it not being a typical Roman landscape, one of the most important works is one where Bruegel painted a field with a windmill
