In Barcelona, Antoni Gaudí left his mark in buildings that are distributed around the city. One of them is Casa Batlló, built in 1877, but remodelled by the Catalan architect in 1904. The old building was boring and graceless so, when Gaudí remodelled it, it changed completely and it transformed into one of the most famous and recognized works of the modernist movement. The project was ordered by the owner of the household, the businessman Josep Batlló, who gave Antoni Gaudí absolute freedom to modify it how he pleased. That way, the unconventional style of the Catalan created a new house for the Batlló family to live in. What Gaudí adds to the old building are the balconies (fundemental parts of this work), galleries, the attic and two more floors. And to all of them, as well as to every room in the house, he gave them their own particular style, sticking coloured tiles on the walls and melting broken glass to decorate. He used conventional materials such as stone and iron but his technique was what made it different, eccentric and marvellous. There isn´t a tourist who doesn´t walk past Casa Batlló without being impressed by the occurances of the author. It´s a unique piece of architecture that was declared part of the World Heritage by UNESCO. If you want to visit it and not miss out on all its details, rent apartments in Barcelona and check out the marvellous world of...

To the southwest of the city of Barcelona we can find the Castle of Montjuic, an old fortress which was used in the 1640s as a battle safe. Like all great fortresses it was built slowly and in stages. Being on top of a mountain, the “Mount Judaicus”, the fortress used its height above the sea to sight possible enemies. First of all it was a simple square of stone and mud but later it took the shape of a fortress first and of a castle afterwards. Different war engineers took charge of construction and reconstruction at the same time until they left it how it is today, with the capacity to hold over three thousand men, with their respective wardrobes and special kitchens, ovens and water storage systems. It´s a monument that represents old Spain and it´s visited by thousands of tourists every day of the year because of it´s eccentric shape and way of construction. Also, from the hill, you can appreciate the whole city of Barcelona which makes it even more attractive. Since 1960 it belongs to the Spanish Government and that way, it stays open to the public, offering an interesting tourist circuit about the uses of the castle and the fortress. If you´d like to know more about the history of the Castle of Montjuic and visit the city, rent apartments in Barcelona to enjoy a few days of art, history and...

Walking through the streets of Barcelona, sooner or later you´ll find some misleading signs printed in the (much) garbage of the city. You will read “Art is rubbish”, on a broken wardrobe door or on a shelf left out on the street, and maybe you´ll ask yourself, whether it is a quick idea of someone passing by or it relates specific content of an artwork, in spite of that, what does the author mean by that phrase? You won’t understand anything until you find other written sings on shelves, and more painted garbage bags in different parts of the city, then you will know that this is a specific project and wondering down the street, you will discover that the author is the Spanish artist Francisco de Pájaro (www.franciscodepajaro.net). Pajaro was born in Zafra, province of Badajoz, in 1970. His career as a painter began as an office decorator when he was just a teenager. In 1994, he joined the School of Arts and Crafts in Merida, where he studied one and half years before leaving his studies and returning to his hometown, where he began devoting himself to painting by following a surrealist and cubist inspiration, taking as references Francis Bacon and Pablo Picasso. His first solo exhibition took place in the gallery of the Caja de Ahorros de Badajoz. When his colleague and partner died in a tragic accident, he decided to leave the company “Rotuletto”(dedicated to corporate and interior design) to devote himself to painting full time. He lived in London two years, making two solo exhibitions in separate spaces, and then moved to Barcelona, a...

The Museum of History of Catalonia, or MHC from its initials, offers a fascinating insight that will present you the whole history of Catalonia in a building called Palau de Mar which was used in the past for storage in the port and, interestingly enough, it´s the only one that still stands from the Port Vell, built in 1881. The museum is considered one of the most interesting cultural attractions in Barcelona because it explains the history of Catalonia through an exhibition of objects, documents, recreations and atmospheres both visual and auditive. The idea of it all is to teach, in an interactive way, the culture of the place. In the museum you can enjoy both temporal and permanent exhibitions. The permanent one is distributed in seven different galleries through which you will revive the historical elements that go from milling wheat to wearing armor from a medieval knight. Catalonia is, without doubt, one of the most interesting chapters in the history of Spain and for that reason if you´re history lover you can´t not visit the Museo de Historia de Catalunya. Rent apartments in Barcelona and walk through the museum...
