Castle of Montjuic

To the southwest of the city of Barcelona we can find the Castle of Montjuic, an old fortress which was used in the 1640s as a battle safe. Like all great fortresses it was built slowly and in stages. Being on top of a mountain, the “Mount Judaicus”, the fortress used its height above the sea to sight possible enemies.

 

First of all it was a simple square of stone and mud but later it took the shape of a fortress first and of a castle afterwards. Different war engineers took charge of construction and reconstruction at the same time until they left it how it is today, with the capacity to hold over three thousand men, with their respective wardrobes and special kitchens, ovens and water storage systems.

 

It´s a monument that represents old Spain and it´s visited by thousands of tourists every day of the year because of it´s eccentric shape and way of construction. Also, from the hill, you can appreciate the whole city of Barcelona which makes it even more attractive.

 

Since 1960 it belongs to the Spanish Government and that way, it stays open to the public, offering an interesting tourist circuit about the uses of the castle and the fortress.
