Basilica of la Estrella

The Basilica of la Estrella is situated in the centre of the city of Lisbon and it´s a striking monument for its neoclassic style. Built in the 18th century by order of Queen María I, after having given birth to her child safe and sound, who was going to be the heir to the throne.   The building is beautiful and harmonic. The rococo dome gives the place some special magic. In the façade which is decorated with statues of saints, columns and windows , we find two identical towers where the bells are.   But the interior is even more fascinating because it´s made out of black and pink marble. There you can find the tomb of the Queen María I and there also is a wonderful nativity scene of more than 500 pieces.   And if this wasn´t enough, you can also go up to the dome to observe the beautiful city at the feet of the Basilica.   In front of the church there´s a park where one can spend a lovely and relaxing afternoon with the beautiful plants and trees that you can find there.   To visit this church and other monuments in the city, get Lisbon...

Piazza di Spagna

The Piazza di Spagna in Rome is known worldwide for its relation to fashion. On its stairs many of the most famous fashions shows in the world take place with first class supermodels and the best (and most expensive) clothes brands.   It has that name because the shape of the square reminds one of the shape of the neighbouring country. Decorated with beautiful flowers of all colours, in spring, the Piazza di Spagna is one of the tourists´ favourite places to spend an afternoon in open air. One of the streets that surrounds the square is Via Condotti, which they say is the most expensive street in Rome. It has the most luxurious shops in the city like Versace, Dolce & Gabbana and Armani. The square has a fountain, built by Pietro Bernini in 1588. It represents a boat and it´s a reminder of the floods of that time, when the only form of salvation was to go on a small boat. The famous steps of the Piazza di Spagna even have their own name, Monte della Trinità and they direct us towards the Church of La Trinità, located on the highest point of the square.     For all of this, the square represents a historical monument in the city of Rome and one that you can´t not visit if in the city. Lisbon Cathedral

The famous Lisbon Cathedral (Sé de Lisboa) is one of the oldest churches in the country and for that it´s a milestone in the history of the capital of Portugal. It started being built in the 12th century after the crusades. Previously, the Arabs dominated the region but, the first king of Portugal when he came to power, ordered that where the mosque was they built the cathedral that we can appreciate today. The structure of the cathedral is Romanesque, although it looks more like a fortress than a cathedral. It was built like this because the mentality of that time was of defending one self from the enemy and to fight in order not to lose the conquests. Portugal was a country that was always affected by earthquakes and this cathedral suffered serious injuries in its structure after a few of them, but today it´s still standing like before thanks to the restorations that take place frequently. The façade is rigid, of great, impenetrable walls, a rosette in the centre, the belfry and an enormous porch of Romanesque characteristics of that time. It´s worthy of being visited because its age leaves one astounded and entering the temple is also magical because there Saint Anthony of Padua was baptised in 1195.   To visit this church and all the other ones in the city, get Lisbon...
