Matisyahu in Nueva York

No, he is not a rabbi who smokes too much marijuana and loses control, he is Matisyahu. Indeed, the “look” of Orthodox Jews is no accident, but this deeper hybrid of Jamaican sound knew how to take advantage of family tradition. Born in Pennsylvania, Matisyahu embraced Orthodox Judaism from a very early age, but it would be his experiences with psychedelic drugs, being a “Phish-head”, ie strong follower and fan of the Jam Band Phish, what would  take him deeper  in his musical career by exploring  the Village of New York. He currently lives in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, and has gone from one Jewish sect to another in an exploration that could be considered mystical or the course fit for an artist full of eccentricities that is constantly changing.

On one hand, reggae music continues to be a style for refugees, moved aside that do not necessarily agree with the conditions of postmodern society. The reggae anthem does not only go hand in hand with this vibrant music, which promotes and calls all listeners to dance, to smoke cannabis and follow a life of vegetarianism and coexistence with nature, reggae spreads a message of peace, unity and dance that unites communities. The question is, does the world need more reggae in the world? Can Matisyahu, an Orthodox Jew from Brooklyn hold on to the banner of reggae without major compromises.

The answer is yes. This post-modern character Matisyahu has all the virtues to build a strong pop music character. The hybrid nature of Matisyahu without a doubt is a rich and rewarding exponent of the international reggae scene, but this religious figure does not only  live of reggae, for Matisyahu was Mc Truth for many years in the band Soulfori ,in other words, Matisyahu raps in addition to compose reggae, a dramatic training to really obtain a a high level of singing. Matisyahu´s first album appeared back in 2004, and was called “Shake off the Dust … Arise”. Since then, the good vibes have not abandoned the Jamaican wannabe. Then came the albums “Youth” (2006) and “Light” (2009). Perhaps the success of Matisyahu, lies precisely in the composition of rap and reggae in a vibrant and engaging danceable party sound that never ends, a music full of joy and  no doubt a great style.

Matisyahu will be performing in New York on the 19th, 20th and 21st of December  at the Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, and on December 22 at Webster Hall in Manhattan. These tour dates are part of the “Festival of Light” organized for the sixth time by the  singer. It will also feature bands such as Aunt Martha, Dub Trio, Adam Deitch and Break Science and Cris Cab. Each band of course on a different date. For more information on concerts and the bands that will be with Matisyahu, visit their official website by clicking here: http://matisyahuworld.com/
