Carnival in Sitges is the hottest, famous and most transgressive party in Europe. This great event is organized in the beautiful Mediterranean city, which in those days the floats offer beautiful, hilarious moments and a great show, Sitges is merely 20 kilometers from Barcelona. This year, the Sitges Carnival will be held from the 16th to the 22nd of February. The craziest partying people gather in this place to go wild, have crazy fun and prepare for the austerity that will continue during the Easter period.
And while we´re still in cold February, there is no doubt that this is the hottest party of the year. More than 300,000 people gather to dance on the main roads of the city. The Carnival begins on Thursday with the arrival of King Carnestoltes (King of the non embarrassments), and with the Queen of Carnival. The Sunday Carnival is the Disbauxa Rua, where you can admire beautiful floats, very skilled dancers (with many groups involved, including the famous Batucada from Brazil).
Tuesday will be the turn of the Rua Extermini, with more shows and hundreds of participants. On Ash Wednesday the festival ends with the burial of Carnestoltes.
But do not forget, this festival is also encouraged by gay and lesbians who celebrate in parallel their own carnival, Since 4 days ago (11th of February). There are numerous theme nights such as the “Night Rosa” (where people dress in the typical traditional Spanish clothing used at weddings and funerals), the “Night of the tourists” and the “Widows and Widowers” … all based on wild and fun entertainment.
It is difficult to say where the official carnival and the large community of Gay / Lesbian one begins and ends: both criss cross for the joy and pleasure of all participants.
The busiest days are surely on Saturday and Sunday, while the party reaches its peak on Tuesday, when the spotlight is directed towards the most beautiful drag queen in La Rua de Extermini, with worldwide outstanding participants .
From Barcelona, ??Sitges is easily accessible by RENFE, which provides connections throughout the day and night. During the carnival the regular lines are intensified.
