Basilica of la Estrella

The Basilica of la Estrella is situated in the centre of the city of Lisbon and it´s a striking monument for its neoclassic style. Built in the 18th century by order of Queen María I, after having given birth to her child safe and sound, who was going to be the heir to the throne.

 

The building is beautiful and harmonic. The rococo dome gives the place some special magic. In the façade which is decorated with statues of saints, columns and windows , we find two identical towers where the bells are.

 

But the interior is even more fascinating because it´s made out of black and pink marble. There you can find the tomb of the Queen María I and there also is a wonderful nativity scene of more than 500 pieces.

 

And if this wasn´t enough, you can also go up to the dome to observe the beautiful city at the feet of the Basilica.

 

In front of the church there´s a park where one can spend a lovely and relaxing afternoon with the beautiful plants and trees that you can find there.
