Nobody can leave Lisbon without trying the famous Belém Cakes.
The story tells that because of the crisis that the Liberal Revolution of 1820 brought, all the convents closed their doors years later, and their workers and the clergy were expelled. The ´clergy´ of the local monastery, in an attempt of survival, placed on sale a few original cakes, which they called ´Belém Cakes´.
From the beginning, the recipe has been maintained a secret and has been transmitted exclusively to the master pastry chefs in charge of their elaboration. Therefore, all of those that are sold in all the cake shops in Lisbon are considered imitations of those that are in the factory in Belém.
This emblem of Lisbon is located in the neighbourhood of Belém, next to the Monastery of the Jeronimos, a building considered part of World Heritage. In its facilities you can see, through a glass, the elaboration of the cakes and then enjoy them with sugar and cinnamon in the cafeteria room that they have available.
As various guests of our apartments in Lisbon have confirmed to us, during high season there´s a long queue in front of the shop to buy them, but the staff, who are used to it, serve quickly and very efficiently.
