The Tower of Belém is one of the most emblematic monuments in Lisbon and of Portugal in general. It has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site and it´s also been chosen by the Portuguese as one of their seven wonders.
It´s construction began in 1514 under the reign of Manuel I of Portugal, with the purpose of defending the entry to the city. Later on, its functions became more of a customs office and boat register for those that entered the Taugus.
Its façade is a work of art, with Oriental and Islamic influences, typical of the Manueline style. You can observe many carved details in the stones, ropes, shields and some naturist elements, like a rhinoceros, which was placed as a tribute to the first animal of this kind to enter Europe.
Inside the tower there are various rooms and some stairs that go to the top, from where you can see a spectacular view of the river and the neighbourhood of Belém, one of the most prestigious and old house and apartments in Lisbon areas.
When you visit the Tower of Belém, you can also walk around the close by monuments, like the Monastery de los Jeronimos, the Patron of Discoveries (Padrao dos Descobrimentos) and try the delicious Belém Cakes.
