My Fair Lady Musical in Vienna

It´s natural that we want to relive the past, remember it and intensify its memory through music or art. The funny thing is when the surfaces of the arts mix together creating one group. And so, musicals keep on surprising and charming us with its proposals full of dancing, sound, acting, costumes and scenography. It´s worth seeing ´My Fair Lady´ live, because in this musical they maintain some of the customs and conservatism which are talked about so much in today´s day and age.

´My Fair Lady´ is a musical which tells the story of Eliza Doolittle, a young girl who sells flowers on the street and who moves to the mansion of the phonetics professor Henry Higgins. Due to a bet with his friend, Coronel Pickering, Higgins decides to take over Eliza´s education, deciding to instruct her in the best forms of expression, good dressing and table manners, with the aim of turning her into a ´lady of society´. After many attempts and errors, Eliza becomes an ´educated lady´ of London´s society. After a somewhat intense drama where Higgins gives himself all credit for having ´saved the lady´ from the danger of mis-education and with Eliza knowing that a lot of that was achieved thanks to his efforts, they both fall in love, completing the perfect circle of singular stories of rags to riches.

Despite that this musical will fascinate you with its beautiful songs, past times costumes, clothing and a fabulous scenography in the city of Vienna, we have to give good account of the conservatism that this show implies. The tension between upper and lower classes is mainly the centre of the story. The figure of the ´prince charming´ which girls still seem to love and fall for even in today´s day and age in the 21st century, becomes the figure of ´educating prince´: the man who saves the woman from her own trap of ignorance, bad manners and mediocre social condition. Eliza, thanks to her efforts, perhaps a victim and victimized by the play, just forces herself to the pure resistance of assuming the role that is offered to her, both in the social order represented by Higgins as in the state role represented by Pickering. Submitted in the tend, Eliza is domesticated by the masculine order, much to our regret.

Certainly, this musical isn´t recommended for feminists or maybe, all the opposite. We can´t stop seeing that at times, culture and art, still maintain old traditions and social topics that today are completely out of fashion.
