Are you so crazy about traveling that you can’t even disconnect from your travels when at home? Walking into the kitchen and feeling the aroma of a real Neapolitan pizza; opening the cookie cupboard and remembering that croissant you had in a Parisian café; or not being able to avoid flipping through the photo album of your summer holidays every time you walk through the living room… These are some of the telltale signs that we really miss our adventures when we confine ourselves within four walls.
There may well be no ideal solution to this problem, as we all have our daily chores: studies, work, people in our care… However, we can defuse it a bit by bringing pieces of our travels into our room. And for that reason I can recommend some ideas (don’t try to mix them all together) to decorate your traveling room.
1.The Telltale Map
Buy a world map that fits on your wall and pins or colorful stickers. Put the map up at any height you like, and you are ready to start sticking or pinning your way through all the places you’ve visited. Additionally, you could also add small photos (Polaroids) of your trip to complete these locations, giving the map a more personal touch. If you find this too conventional and would rather find something more original, I suggest buying one of those fake antique maps, or a map that only shows the contours of the countries, so you can color them in once you’ve visited them.
2. Japanese Style
Have you been to Japan? Whether you have or haven’t, the culture of the country is markedly different from Europe’s, and that’s why decorating your room in full Japanese style is a very daring and flashy way to mark your travelling territory. For starters, the bed should be low, and its surroundings kept simple. Red or fuchsia lighting can also help give it an oriental touch. As for the walls, this is the place to outdo yourself: Japanese characters, a big Japanese fan, or a drawing of a cherry tree, whose blossoms (sakura) are one of the best-known symbols of Japanese culture. 3.Dare to Try the Ceiling
Lately, it has become somewhat fashionable for those with little space to make the most of the ceiling as a place to put up posters, flags, photos… you name it. A friend of mine had the usual ‘Keep calm and carry on’ over a Union Jack and it did look great. You can even see it from your bed when you lie down, and happy dreams!
4.Recreate a Location
There is always a trip, landscape, or location that really stays with us because we’ve fallen for it: Paris, the Alhambra, a tour through the desert, Machu Picchu… To make things a bit simpler, I suggest trying a combination of personal pictures and items brought from said location. For instance, if you want to recreate the Sahara Desert, you could put up some pictures of yourself with camels, add a plastic palm tree, a glass jar with desert sand, or hang some fabrics from your ceiling to give the impression of a tent.
5.Customized Pillows and Bedsheets
You don’t want to make life more complex than it has to be? Fair enough. Pick up the phone and call any of those photography shops that also sell customized mugs, stuffed animals, pillows or bedsheets. Send them some pictures from a trip you really enjoyed (or find some online), and pay for it all! In no time and with little effort you’ll have a room that, well, is not bad at all.
