Carmo Archaeological Museum Lisbon

The old church of the Convento del Carmo was created in 1389 in the memory of the Portuguese victory in the battle of Aljubarrota. Today it´s some beautiful ruins that are worthy of visiting.

It was considered in past times as the biggest Gothic style exponent in Lisbon and it suffered severe damage in its structure during the earthquake of 1755, damage which was then increased in a fire that occurred a few years later. Queen Maria I ordered its partial reconstruction.

Currently, the majestic ruins hold the Carmo Archaeological Museum, which possesses valuable pieces like the well-preserved ancient adult and child mummies.

In the museum facilities various activities take place which are directed for the younger ones, with dance lessons, art and games for children over the age of 3.

It´s located in the prestigious shopping area of Chiado, right in the city centre, where there are also apartments in Lisbon To get to the museum you only have to walk a few blocks from the metro stop of Baixa Chiado.

The museum opens from 10am until 6pm in winter and until 7pm in summer, and it´s closed on Sundays, Christmas Day, New Year´s Day and May 1st.
