A great place to get to know the objects and the art of the 20th century is the Catalan Modernism Museum, located in a building projected by the famous architect Enric Sagnier for the Bertrand in 1902, located on Balmes 48 in Barcelona.
The museum is part of a private initiative of the Pinós y Guirao family, which just like the art nouveau movement it was financed by the Catalan bourgeoisie to recover and diffuse the beauty and splendor of a great era, where certain upper-class families could enjoy the same luxuries as those in Paris, the centre and origin of this artistic expression.
This museum is the only one in the world dedicated to Modernism and it has over 400 art pieces spread around a space of 1,000 sq metres, divided in two floors. On the second floor there´s the furniture, among which we find works of Antoni Gaudí and Joan Busquet. On the ground floor there are wonderful sculptures and paintings from Catalan artists such as Lluís Graner and Joaquim Mir among others.
So, if you´re thinking of travelling and renting apartments in Barcelona to relax for a few days, this museum is a great alternative to get to know a piece of then history of Modernist art in the city.
