Vienna in December smells like gingerbread, biscuits just out of the oven, honey, caramel and Christmas pine. And, of course, everywhere they prepare specialities which give this time of year a special taste, where cold isn´t an obstacle to enjoy the city of the lit up monuments.
However, the small secrets are in the 10 Christmas markets that the city has to delight those who visit it during the festive period. But before I want to recommend that you don´t miss out on going around the Town Square of Vienna, where yo can enjoy all the magic of the Vienna Carrousel with your children, as well as sweets, puppets, magicians and other wonders which are apart of the Christmas festivities and the Baby Jesus Market, ´Wiener Chistkindlmark´ in German. This has 140 stands to enjoy while buying local crafts, products and everything that you need to enjoy Christmas with your family and/or friends. It´s open from the 21st to the 24th of December, from 10am to 9.30pm, but closing an hour later on Fridays and Saturdays.
Another place which is unmissable is the Christmas Crafts Market at Schönbrunn Palace. Here you can see the 70 wooden stores where you´ll enjoy finding objects for gifts while you listen to Christmas carols and your children can play and have fun with kids activities. This market is open from mid-November until Christmas Eve, and it reopens from the 28th of December until New Year´s Day 2012, from 10am until 9pm except on Christmas Eve when it only opens until 4pm.
You also cannot miss on your trip to Vienna the Spittelberg Christmas Market, where there are over 100 beautiful stands made of wood waiting for you to go and choose some crafts and works of art by local artists. This market is only a 10 minute walk from the historical city centre and you can walk, see and enjoy good restaurants in the area as well. And so, you can make a market shopping day into a romantic day in old Vienna. This market is open from the 17th of November until the 23rd of December, and its opening hours are from Monday to Thursday from 3pm until 9pm, open an hour longer on Fridays, and on Saturday and Sunday it opens at 10am instead.
A market which cannot be missed either if you like contemporary art is the Karsplatz Christmas Market. This one is organized by the Contemporary Art and Crafts Association of Vienna and, as its name indicates, it´s located on Karsplatz, right in the city centre close to Resselpark. This market is open from the 18th of November until the 23rd of December, from 12pm until 6pm.
Having a coffee with delicious sweet cakes and the whole traditional Christmas food is a panorama which you cannot miss this December. For that, rent apartments in Vienna and enjoy all of that, as well as visiting these beautiful Christmas markets.
