Columbus Day in New York

Coinciding with the latin celebration of the discovery of America (on behalf of the Western Europeans), the Columbus Citizen Foundation organizes, every 12th of October, an impressive parade through Fifth Avenue. The promoters of this initiative, grouped under a philanthropic association, are of Italian origin, as is supposed that Christopher Columbus was too, who they considered born in Genoa. The parade is for having a great time, to go out onto the street, to remember that European heritage and also to spread the aims of this non-profit foundation, whose main aim is to promote the schooling and education among the most disadvantaged sectors of society. Although they work all year long through a fix office with its webpage, the parade also presents itself as a good excuse to gather funds among the middle classes and, as well, raise awareness on the importance of education for personal, social and economic development.

Although the New York elites give their generous donations during a charity gala, any traveller can attend this colourful parade on the 12th of October. The donation is optional and always with discretion. Remember to have booked some of the excellent apartments in New york and if it´s in Little Italy, all the better, because the city receives many visitors in October.
