On February 25th the brothers David and Jose Manuel Munoz who form the group Estopa will perform at the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona.
David and Jose Manuel are two guys from Cornella de Llobregat (Barcelona) sons of immigrants from Extremadura, who began their musical career in 1999. Estopa recorded a demo that circulated through several record companies. BMG / Ariola offered them a record deal after listening to the single of their first album “The slit of your skirt,” loaded with rumba, freshness and street wit.
Their musical influences from their childhood are rumba groups like Los Chichos, The Chunguitos or Bordón 4 and songwriters like Joaquín Sabina. In fact, Estopa is an updated and improved version of these rumba bands with lyrics that are pure street poetry
They started a musical style you might call “very pimp Catalan pop rumba ” a style that has evolved to a more commercial 2poppy” one and less influenced by flamenco, but essentially they remain the same band after selling over 4 million records. Illegal downloads have affected them but they are the Spanish group that sell more albums in their Country.
Their first album “Estopa” was released at the end of 1999 and in 2000 this album is a success that leads them to sell 1,400,000 copies, with many radio hits and dozens of concerts throughout Spain and part of Latin America.
This phenomenon was consolidated in 2001 with their highly anticipated second album “Destrangis”, with even more sarcastic lyrics and a more rumba kind of style with a little less rock and hardcore in it. They start selling out arenas and album sales soared. In 2002 they hit the market with “More Destrangis” with new material from the group. In 2004 they released their third album “The street is yours?” Which again was a smash saleswise and leads them through Spain on their tour “Munoz VS Muñoz “. In 2005 they released “Voices From Beyond the Grave”, a very mature album that flirts with reggae and Brazilian music. In 2008 they published “Allenrok” tribute to their native Cornellà. Records become more mainstream and rumba and less rock and roll . In 2009 they published “Estopa Anniversarivm X” in the same line of “Allenrok”. In 2011 “Estopa 2.0” goes on sale, this time a more electronic feeling is present , but with an air of Catalan rumba that delights their fans.
They have a very strong live show , one of the best ones in the Spanish scene. The musicians give it all and always have moments of collective ecstasy when they play songs like “The slit of your skirt,” “As Camarón”, “The middle of the Chichos” or “brake pads”. People have a great time at their concerts, which are full of optimism. The public loves them and feels identified with them. The comments the Muñoz brothers make between songs in their live set are funny and intelligent and people love them
They have performed many times at the Palau Sant Jordi. Always selling it out and always is a complete success.
