The European Museum of Contemporary Art in Barcelona has as its aim to promote and diffuse figurative art of the 20th and 21st century, and gather the artists that, with a contemporary language, continue with the tradition of this artistic style.
The museum is located in the Old Town of Barcelona, in the Palau Gomis in the Born neighbourhood, a tourist zone par excellence and the cradle of Catalan culture. The particularity of this museum is the type of art that it holds, more traditional and decorative, which has transformed it into one of the milestones that gathers tourists and decoration lovers.
As well as the interesting works of art that it exhibits, the Palau Gomis is an architectonic beauty of great spaces and styles. It was built in 1791 by order of the merchant Francesc Gomis to the architect Joan Garrido. It´s held from invading Napoleonic troops, to a brothel as well as a charity house, which holds the history of Catalonia in each of its corners.
The museum, to stimulate the development of a new generation of figurative artists, concedes every year the Painting and Figurative Sculpture Prize.
