Houseboat Museum

Houseboat Museum is a very original museum in the city of Amsterdam. It´s a floating boat that shows how people live “in the water”. In Amsterdam, with there being so many canals, people live on boats and that fascinates tourists.

Vincent van Loon saw that and decided to create a museum on the boathouses. He lives on a houseboat and every time that he looked out of his door, people came to ask him questions regarding how he lived, how do the water and electric supply work, what happened with the sewage waters, with cold and humidity, etc. And after replying to these questions time after time, he decided to start a museum that talked about this.

This was how in 1996 he opened, for the first time, his Houseboat Museum. The boat is called “Hendrika Maria” and it´s anchored on the Prinsengracht, bordering the famous Jordaan and it´s also very close to other interest points in the city.

The very same Vincent van Loon was who built the museum and who was in charge that everything was clear to foreigners.
