Maeght Gallery Barcelona

The history of the Maeght Gallery begins in Cannes, France, when in 1936 it opened its doors for an exclusive public. Ten years later it opened its doors in Paris and, afterwards, in Barcelona, making room for many artists who couldn´t find any in the more conventional spaces.

Great artists and thinkers have been tied to this gallery and its Marguerite and Aimé Maeght Foundation, opened by André Marraux in 1941 when he was France´s Culture Minister, who worked with the Catalan architect Josep Lluís Sert to build the gallery and give space for contemporary art and less commercial art.

They´ve dodged great changes in art and society, but they´re part of the contemporary history of the galleries and the effort to boost creativity and expression in new artists, in the same way that they opted for Miró´s painting and sculpture, the great kinetic sculptures by Calder and the limitless creation on Picasso and Bracque, as well as the sculptures of Chillida and others who have exhibited in their galleries to the delight of the public.

The opening hours are from Monday to Saturday from 9.30am until 7pm, excepting Monday which is only open until 6pm.
