Museo de Arte Antiguo

The Rua das Janelas Verdes is where the Museo de Arte Antiguo is located, which contains some European works that go from the 14th century up until the 20th, and are of recognized artists such as Bosch, Dürer and Raphael.

The most important work of all the Portuguese artists is undoubtedly the “Veneración de San Vincent” which is a very important historical document that illustrates some of the most important personalities of the 15th century, such as Henry the Navigator.

Another of the more important exhibitions are the illustrations of the Portuguese arrival in Japan in the 16th century. For the Japanese this was the first contact with any European civilization and they were completely fascinated by the Portuguese.

Another of the most important collections of all is the collection of decorative art and silver that includes the Ostensorio de Belém, that was created from the first importation of gold that Vasco de Gama brought and, also, the collection of pieces of French silver from the 18th century, especially those created by François Thomas Germain, who belonged to the Portuguese Royal Family.

The Museo de Arte Antiguo is important because it has, through its works of art, the history of Portuguese civilization. You can find Lisbon accommodation and walk through its galleries.
