One of the most outstanding museums in Lisbon is the Museum of Design and Fashion which is also one of the most important in the world created after the 20th century and here is where all the great critics assure that some of the best clothes collections in Europe are.
It opened its doors in 1999 and closed in 2006 to be redesigned and modernized and, finally, in 2009 it opened again with the name that it´s currently known as (before it was just called Museum of Design).
One of the permanent collections is the one of Francisco Capelo who presents more than 1200 pieces that go from dresses for artists such as Renee Zellweger (who used it in the 2001 Oscars) or a costume of Jean Desses.
The design collection has works by over 230 designers that represent the newest tendencies in fashion around the world. There are works of Philippe Starck, Charles Earnes, George Nelson, Arne Jacobson, Paul Henningsen, Vener Panton, Masanori Umeda, henning Koppel and Tom Dixon and it includes close to 200 classic designs with jewels, glasses and different materials from 1937 up until today.
In total there are more than a thousand design objects and more than 1200 fashion garments of famous and respected people from the world of fashion design such as Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood and Yves Saint Laurent.
