The National Portrait Gallery, which is in the city of London, is an art gallery that collects and presents historically important portraits of famous people in Great Britain. When it opened its doors in 1856, it was the first portrait gallery in the whole world and, for that reason, today it´s still one of the most extensive ones.
In 1896 the gallery was transported to where it is today, in front of Trafalgar Square and began to form part of the National Gallery. From that moment, it expanded twice.
The collection of the museum presents portraits regardless of who the painter was but looking at who the illustrated person was. This is due to the idea isn´t to present important works of art (despite many of them being so) but to present important people.
The collection includes photographs, caricatures, paintings, drawings and sculptures and one of the most famous ones in the gallery is one of William Shakespeare.
