Sadly it says a lot about our time and civilization that the only drugs that are legal are those that cloud the mind and intelligence. Under absurd and hypocritical mottos (can we not label as drugs – and many of them strong ones, if there was any sense from the slightest intellectual strictness to make the famous and biased distinction between hard and soft drugs – tobacco, alcohol, coffee, tea, medicines…?) such as zero tolerance to all types of drugs, not only do we condemn an unfair and unnecessary social stigma to a large part of the world population, also insulting history and human intelligence, but we also stop people who out of free will decide to consume illegal substances from accessing a minimum quality control, which causes many thousands of tragic accidents every day which are perfectly avoidable. And if all of this nonsense wasn´t enough, the fact is still that political prohibitions, an attempt to attack the individual right of deciding freely regarding what only concerns one self and distance ourselves from the possibility of building and accessing a necessary culture to do with the ways in which our body reacts to certain existent substances, have not only solved the so called ´drug problem´ (drugs are still consumed massively all over the world) but we can also state that they´re the ones responsible for creating them. You could argue that it´s precisely since the existence of prohibition that there´s a social problem with drugs, and not the other way around. Drug consumption remains a hot topic, whether we’re talking about governments trying to suppress that consumption or advocates of the legalisation of drug use. While some countries like the United States strive to discourage the use of drugs, and other countries try to cut production, the drug cartels continue generating millions of dollars and are often connected in some way to the governments of these same countries. The idea of legalising drugs frightens Western governments for a variety of reasons, one of which is because to do so could grant drug-producing countries like Colombia or Peru powerful economies, catapulting them into developed-country status. We should remember the opium wars of the late nineteenth century as an example of the way governments’ policies on drugs have evolved over time. The many stories about LSD in the 60´s, the tradition of the Beat poets, The Doors of Perception by Aldous Huxley and Space Rock, all form part of an ongoing discourse between art culture and drug use. But as well as inspiring revelations, drugs can be blamed for stifling opportunity and action: Much has been said about the fact that an entire generation in the 60s was made too numb by LSD to create a real revolution. On a more frivolous note, the Cannabis Cup is back this year, which is great news for all fans of high quality marijuana. This event started back in 1987, making this the 24th edition.
