Musicals in Madrid

Although it is often a easy target, for a certain sector of both music snobs and the, supposedly serious drama, the truth is that musicals have a hardly negligible power of fascination for anyone who has overcome their prejudices and have been fortunate attend one of the good ones. But regardless of the quality of production, musicals are from more than one point of view a phenomenon that represents some of the most essential features and attractive performing arts, beginning with the principle of suspension of disbelief. Everything that happens in a musical, no matter how crazy or unrealistic it may be, is accepted by the public without protest and without scandal as far as concerns credibility under one of the oldest of dramatic conventions, which opens up an amazing range of possibilities for illusion and play that is highly attractive for both the spectators and theater artists. Add to this, the spectacular media advertising that often accompanies this type of performances, often -related to sensitivity in the ways contemporary artists of our time, we can state without hesitation that the contemplation of a good music can be comparable in intensity, depth and emotion to any other theatrical event, however dressed in high culture it comes. For at least a decade, the Madrid’s Gran Via has been strongly committed to star musicals in its chimerical intention to compete someday with the quality and variety of London´s West End. Certainly, the urban setting could hardly be more propitious. Among the musicals that tourists will be able to see in January, the recreation in the Teatro Lope de Vega (Gran Vía,...

Observed. Voyeurism and vigilance since 1870 in Madrid

Observing without being seen generates a pleasure which some like more than others, but this exhibition called ´Observed. Voyeurism and vigilance through a camera since 1870´ is a cultural exhibition for all types of public. Since the month of October until the 8th of January 2012, it will be exhibited so that visitors can enjoy it. It will take place at the Fundación Canal in Madrid, a very interesting place due to its social and cultural commitments. Fundación Canal was created by the company Canal de Isabel II in 2000, which provides water service to the whole city of Madrid. It´s a public company which handles water since 1984, when it took over the commitment to maintain the quality and the security of the provided service. By working with a natural resource, the staff at ´Canal Isabel II´ spread environmental care and energy and water saving in the everyday life of society. And that´s how, in 2000, they decided to create a foundation which represented their ideals and which shows the social commitment that the company has with society. Since then, they´ve been in charge of various cultural events, and they always promote the inauguration of painting exhibitions, music shows and many other arts. What´s interesting about this exhibition is that one can go through the years between 1870 and today with 170 images and two videos which show the indiscrete look of a group of people on sex and eroticism, but also on famous people, encompassing the subject of continuous vigilance which brings them so much passion and fanaticism. Taking photographs is slightly voyeurish, a voyeur photographer who...

Crazy Horse in Madrid

One of the greatest attractions of the last Venice Film Festival, was the presence of the American director Frederick Wiseman (Boston, 1930) to present a documentary on the legendary Parisian cabaret ´Crazy Horse´ which has just turned 60 years old. Of course, he would deny this term, and not without motive. Wiseman isn´t interested in labels and neither does he share the need to separate films in different genres, especially his, in which the dramatical structure has always been the common essential element, the core that runs across them may be his interest for the human body -and his inherent yet deceiving fragility- in all his manifestations, from the way i which the world of ballet uses it as an essential way of expression to the use that the monks (which in some way they try to deny) or the soldiers (for whom it constitutes a weapon or tool of aggression and attack) make of them. Hence that Wiseman has no qualms in admitting that, actually, what made him make this latest film was just ´Crazy Horse´ in particular, an inexcusable reference for all genre lovers, of which he´s been carrying the flag and has been a reference point for over six decades. An inside ´Crazy Horse´ his interest focuses on, another common aspect of his work, the people, specifically the fabulous and legendary dancers, whose gaze, fluctuating between tenderness and the most consuming and desiring voyeurism, makes them exceptional as professionals of their art and as people. Wiseman´s film is one of the ways that ´Crazy Horse´ has to celebrate his 60th birthday. Another consists in bringing out...
