Terre vulnerabili – vulnerable land in Milan

On October 21 the exhibition “Terre vulnerabili (vulnerable land) opened in the center Hangar Bicocca in Milan, which is part of a four-sample exhibition project, which will take place until May 29, 2011. To explore closely the growth of a living organism, each of these exhibitions is devoted to a stage in the life of an organism. This way the project seeks to recognize the concept of vulnerability not only in physical-biological terms, but also in moral terms. Vulnerability seen as the unusual ability to empathize and to enable all people to recognize and accept their moral responsibility towards others, the community and the environment. Thus, the project is understood as a work in progress, developing over time, an organism that grows in front of the public eye. This way, it also intends to develop new discourses and modes of action with respect to the vulnerability of land, especially focusing on its political and ethical dimensions. In that sense, this project encourages reflection and notions of responsibility, like hope, utopia and feasibility of a sustainable future. With the participation of 30 Italian and international artists and the same number of works, it will explore the possible future, which certainly promises something better than this. But the exhibition not only explores the vulnerability of the land itself, but also our bodies, adding a more personal property to the project theme. The dilution of borders and ethnic groups, the mixture of languages, bring out this vulnerability. ‘Haul vlogging’: obsessed with consuming

Since the beginings of YouTube in 2005, the vlogging (video blogging) phenomenon hasn’t stopped expanding. However, within the world of vloggers world a rather peculiar subculture for their passionate devotion to capitalism and consuming good has developed: the haul vloggers. Generally girls, mostly Americans and between 13 and 20 years old, vloggers devote to go shopping and show their acquisitions in great detail before the camera. Such a simple but sweeping idea, the most successful ones have come to thousands of loyal viewers who are still devoted to their most banal musings It is curious both the need for sharing their consumerism exploits to a wide audience, as well as the pleasure to be part of them, albeit in a very passive and indirect way. In the end, what unites vloggers and spectators is their love for shopping, but mostly the attention they give each other. But being a form of free publicity, vloggers not the only ones that feed on the attention of thousands of followers. The brands promoted in these videos have found an effective and powerful advertising channel, so many of these brands contact the girls personally  and then flood them with free products for them to display them on their vlog. However, this is a double-sided sword, as companies have no control over what opinion will vloggers have about their product in front of thousands of people. So, thanks to these girls, a product may be exhausted in days after posting their video, or, by contrast, be a complete failure. Wire live in Milan

Wire is one of those bands that started playing when there weren’t too many bands hanging around the scene yet and since 1976, when the group was born, and they continued, on and on, and never separated. They did have a few hiatus that lasted a short time (except the one that went from ´85 to ´92). The group began in London with Colin Newman on vocals and guitar, Graham Lewis on bass and vocals, Bruce Gilbert on guitar and Robert Gotoba on drums. In the beginning they were strongly related to punk. In fact, on many occasions Wire was claimed to be one of the most important rock bands of the decades of the 70s and 80s. In fact, a contemporary critic called Stewart Mason said that Wire’s first three albums expanded sound barriers not only regarding punk but all music in general. Over time, the musical style was veering toward the art punk or post punk primarily by atmospheric sound that is, dark lyrics and policies. Thanks to the arrangements that they were making to the songs through their disks Wire earned a reputation as a group that experimented a lot throughout their career. Their debut album, called Pink Flag, was the most famous of their many songs and which contained songs lasting less than a minute. For example “Field Day For The Sundays”, which lasts only 28 seconds. Contemporary sculpture in Milan

The Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro features an exquisite exhibition which collects the work of more than 80 Italian artists who broke into the contemporary art scene thanks to their sculptures. Here is the presentation of three artists who form part of the interesting exhibition at the Fondazione Arnaldo Pomodoro, which opened on October 20th and will be open until January 30th, 2011. Maurizio Cattelan is undoubtedly one of the most famous artists of Italy, who was born in Padua in 1960. He launched his first creative ventures in the field of designing, building furniture for apartments. And hence was born his fiery passion for art, culminating in his first exhibition in Bologna in the late 80´s. His work combines sculpture with performance, creating an interesting paradox that reflects his elegant sense of humor and momentum. Vanessa Beecroft transgresses the boundaries between art and design, sexist and feminist, intelligent and coarse. Naked women in heels populate her imaginary world, which have already been exposed in several renowned museums. Her peculiar living sculptures use the figure of the immovable clone, to provoke questions about the nature of sexual attraction. Alice Cattaneo, born in Milan, makes sculptures and animated videos created using materials found in everyday life. The work of this artist is very funny and, in turn, ethereal, opportunistic and precarious. Sometimes her sculptures seem to be the result of a magical accident, sometimes it shows the dedication and the pragmatic approach that has made the art Cattaneo famous. Disquieting Images exhibit in Milan

On October 19th,  a fascinating exhibition opened at the Milan Triennale. The exhibit, called “Disquieting Images” features the works of a number of artists whose photos share   a decidedly critical outlook and have a visceral impact. Here you will find disturbing images of problematic content, such as pollution, gender, AIDS, the mafia, sadomasochism, war, drugs, transvestism, and many other social topics. These photographs document life and death, erotica, illness and social and political problems that have rocked our world though out the twentieth century and continue to provoke. With a rich aesthetic diversity, the exhibition takes us closer to issues of social and emotional impact. Here is a brief introduction to two of the artists represented in this impressive display. Pieter Hugo: The South African photographer explores the lives of those who live on the margins of society. Known for his straightforward and provocative aesthetics, the artist turns his lens towards those parts of Africa that are usually hidden from view. He is always in search of the stark reality, without makeup or concessions to the viewer, and always shows us the brutal, honest and authentic side of Africa. Diane Arbus: This legendary American photographer, one of the most important twentieth century wanted to show the “evil” and undercurrent of alienation present in our society through her work. She too, like Hugo, was attracted to marginalized individuals: circus folks, transvestites, dwarves and prostitutes who lived in many cases, the inverse of the American dream. We invite you to take a look at this interesting exhibition, which will also feature work from Letizia Battaglia, Nina Berman, Elena Dorfman, Donna Ferrato,...

The Great Tribulation, the Fifth Seal of the Book of The Apocalypse

After the first four Seals or Prophecies of the Book of Revelation (the last book of the New Testament), which show the four Horsemen of the Apocalypse announcing their prophecies – false Christs and false prophets in the first one, wars in the second, starvation in the third and death in the fourth, now comes the Fifth Seal announcing the Great Tribulation, where the saints and the believers suffer martyrdom and severe persecutions. So, The Great Tribulation is the indiscriminate persecution against the followers of the Christian faith after Jesus has ascended to heaven. Matthew 24:9 defines perfectly the Fifth Prophecy: “Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and ye shall be hated of all nations for my name´s sake.” This Verse refers to the Messiah Followers Tribulation, which would begin at the time of Christ and will intensify over the centuries. Thus the Jewish nation would be persecuted and hated by other people and beliefs. Israel would be one of the hardest hit because of the Great Tribulation. Already in Roman times, the soldiers entered into the temples destroying everything they found. Over two millennia, the Jewish nation has lost billions of lives… The most shocking and bloody time in the history has been the anti-Semitic World War II, with the black episode of the Holocaust. Some years later, when the western world understood all the horrors and penuries that the Jewish people had suffered, they wanted to return them their national territory (in 1948). But still today the terrorist acts against the Palestinian and the Israeli people do not stop, and...

Modern Day Phobias in Today’s World

Venustraphobia or Caligynephobia: to understand the meaning of those words we should have studied a bit of Greek and above all we should be prepared to read some very strange things. Have you guessed the meaning of Venustraphobia? It is the fear of beautiful women. There is also a word for those who fear laughter, sex, paper, the navel or even news stories. Sounds unbelievable, doesn’t it? Let’s discover if you suffer from some kind of phobia. In the cartoons on TV we sometimes see a cook that suffers from Musophobia or in other words he’s afraid of mice. This is not to be confused with Mageirocophobia or the fear of cooking as many men seem to suffer from this one! The word phobia comes from Greek mythology and tells the story of Phobos, the personification of fear and horror, son of Ares and Aphrodite. His Roman equivalent was Timor, which resembles the word ‘fear’ or ‘temor’ in Spanish. Phobos is also the largest of the two moons of Mars and the closest to the planet. In everyday life, this phobia is not a rare disorder but it can cause problems and therefore may have to be treated. It can be cured with books, support groups, hypnosis, shock methods or something called exposure therapy: the gradual confrontation of this particular fear s and learn to control it. One of the most common phobias is Arachnophobia (fear of spiders). Many people who have it, can not even see a photo of a spider. It is estimated that half of all women and 10% of men panic when they see those...
