Much has been discussed about reggae and its culture. The Rastafarians, the marijuana, Bob Marley, the legalization of drugs, etc.. The truth is that in Europe many people choose reggae as a lifestyle alternative. It is not unusual to find people with “dreadlocks” and hippie clothes, with hemp products, handmade jewelry a pacifist attitude and “melow” way of dealing with problems. It´s funny how all these speeches are tied together to create a lifestyle in Europe, which apparently goes against the typical Western social standards. All this adds policies of pacifism, coming from Eastern or New Age culture, including meditation classes, yoga, vegetarianism, are already understood as “political correctness”. And of course: let´s save the animals! … Sometimes however, being peaceful does not solve much, and want a better world, does not make the world a better place. Perhaps if you listen to much reggae, you could become suspicious: not only of happiness and relaxation, the world is experienced. The cracked capitalist reality, apparently leads a group of individuals by this proclamation of subculture, the desire for a re-raise of the social norms of a society of Ultra-consumption. Indeed, reggae accompanies these proposals, like the sound of a promised land that has just arrived, but is still taking shape, in which young people are concerned and outraged joining. There are bands who split up after having left only one memorable album provoking all sorts of nostalgia and impossible desires; there are bands that do so in their highest moment leaving a painful and perfect memory; there are bands that split up a bit later than they should have but it´s hardly noticeable because the albums that they were releasing were somewhat out of time, by pure inertia or commitment or lack of courage, in order to definitively break a few dependable ties that have been too strong, they add new deep dimensions to their work that will always be remembered as unbeatable and touched by grace with the added epic and heroic dimension given by the conscious or unconscious crepuscular sense, especially when it´s shared by the artist and its crowd; and there are bands who never split up but insist in living off their past, accepting the price of becoming a mere parody of what they used to be and, amplified by their history and their enormous media power, they become objectified icons, someone else to go and see and listen and who refuse to acknowledge their slow disappearance and regurgitation in the shape of a flagship of experience without feelings on behalf of the society of spectacle. What to do during this holidays? After the Christmas and New Year, there are few interesting activities to do, sometimes, shopping with discounts, which are everywhere in January, it is not fun anymore. Christmas usually leave our wallets exhausted. The purchasing gifts, whether for Christmas or the three kings (Epiphany) celebrated on January 6 in countries like Spain, there is little incentive to keep spending money. However, if you´re a fan of ice-skating, Holiday on Ice is for you. Perhaps, beyond the end of year shopping, there is nothing better to travel a bit with the whole family. Organizing a family trip is usually, somewhat more difficult than when traveling alone or with a partner. Traveling alone gives you the opportunity to see places in more detail, take long walks and explore new places with greater freedom. Similarly, organizing travel itinerary, breaks and places, everything becomes much easier, especially in a city like Vienna, with such cultural events, museums, galleries and nightspots to explore. Traveling with your couple on the other hand, can also be a very pleasant experience. However, again there is the question of accommodating the interests of the other and know how to negotiate on sightseeing sites and museums. There are couples, which just love to travel anywhere and hang out together. However, other more modern can’t leave their intellectual tastes and interests at home … Negotiate!
