Paris Photo 2011

They say that photography is about portraying an ´instant´, of capturing ´the moment´. There´s no more retrograded and out of date explanation of what really photograph is today. And with the social network boom, especially since the growth of Facebook, the resource of photography has surpassed the expectancies of its supposed function of ´capturing´ and ´portraying´. Photography today is a daily part of our social interaction in the networks. Of course, you see the photos of families, friends, acquaintances, concerts and so on on the net, but this is well above the mere image. Photography today is used as a constructing resource of image and discourse on a personal level, levels which are alarming and which generate plenty of questions. All in all, little is studied about these phenomenons and their reach. Today, common citizens strive to potentiate their social image and character from their network profiles. What´s offered to the eye is not what´s real but, what is it? There´s no sure condition on the image which is presented and about it, the whole world can draw conclusions or comment, reproduce the image to others, or mention themselves in it. And so, from an image, more texts and other images, comments and discussions are generated. The fiction which is produced from these portraits which seem everyday like, can be taken to extreme fiction which many people consume in a lot of their time. Producing an image with resources such as Photoshop and other programmes is now in everyone´s reach. Virtual and reality are confused, and what was just a ´portrait´ is now a confusion or unfolding or ideas...

Festa dei Cornuti: Celebrating Infidelity

In Italy, someone who suffers an infidelity of his or her partner is called cornuto or “horned one”. But where does this strange term come from? Tradition suggests that its origin derives from ancient Rome, when many legionaries returning from the battlefields after several years were rewarded with a horn full of coins, only to finding upon reaching their home that their wives had found themselves lovers to keep their beds warm. Rocca Canterano is a tiny Italian town of just over 200 inhabitants, located in the province of Rome. It was not always such a small town: at the beginning of the century it had ten times more inhabitants, and around its beautiful church of Santa Maria Assunta meetings, festivals and rituals were held all summer long. However, the most curious event that takes place in Rocca Canterano is in early autumn, on the Sunday nearest to November 11 (in 2011 it will be the 13th). This is the Festa dei Cornuti (ie, the party of cuckolds), held in honour of St. Martin, bishop of Tours and patron saint of all those who have been cheated on by their partners. There are many different theories about why the festival is celebrated at that time … Some say it is a pagan holiday in origin: the Celts celebrated the end of the year traditionally in November with a twelve-day-long wild party during which there were frequent infidelities … Another less exciting explanation is that this is when cattle fairs are held, and we must keep in mind that the animals of the region generally have good sized horns … There is a...

Junior Boys in Helsinki

It’s clear that since the internet entered into the majority of homes around the world, independent music has begun to gain importance as groups can now reach any corner of the globe by just putting their music online. Many innovative and interesting groups who would otherwise struggle to be heard outside their home town can now become famous thanks to viral videos or audio recordings which catch the interest of masses of people many miles away. Junior Boys, an independent electronic group from Canada, was one of these bands. The duo, consisting of Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus, met in 1999. Their first demo was rejected by all the record companies they sent it to. All those labels ended up regretting their decision. The band’s first LP, entitled “Last Exit”, was released in October 2004 through the label, KIN Records. They then did a tour with Caribou, who had already established a great reputation, and this helped raise their profile. In 2006 they presented “So This Is Goodbye” and then, two years later, “Begone Dull Care”. Both releases had a major impact on the electronic scene and many songs on these albums were included in important compilations. On 13 June this year they released their latest production, named “It´s All True”, through Domino Records. The duo will be presenting it with performances around the world, including a show on November 16 in Finland.   More information: http://www.tiketti.fi/tapahtuma/12458 Tavastia: Urho Kekko katu 4-6, 00100 Helsinki, Finland   MiLK If you are renting one of the apartments in Helsinki and are in the mood for dancing to some of the best electro-pop tunes around, then the Junior Boys gig in Tavastia is the place to be.
