La Regata Storica Venice 2011

Considered one of the most important dates on the year´s calendar, “Voga alla Veneta”, Venice´s Regata Storica brings together flocks of locals and tourists alike in aid of water sports and their history. The rowing competitions have been held on the Venice lake for thousands of years – though nowadays, the competition is especially famous, thanks to the historical march which happens before the race. The delightful spectacle, which revives the glorious past of one of the mediterranean´s most influential and powerful marine capitals, represents a piece of history, with a number of typical 16th century style boats, with gondola men disguised by the traditional suits of the era, transporting the Duke, the Duchess and other high rank officials of Venice across the waters of the grand canal. Since the middle of the 13th century, when the first regatta took place, as part of the traditional “Festa delle Marie” festival, the regattas have been a key celebration for both locals and foreigners. Venice, due to it´s geographical conditions, has always been a water city where rowers occupied a prominent role in local society – and this event serves as a kind of recognition of the important jobs they do for the wider Venice community. In 1500, Jacopo dé Barbari made the first graphic representation of the event, with a map which illustrated groups of men rowing boats through the waters of the grand canal, accompanied by the word “Regata”. Ever since then, the regattas have been the favoured subject matter for artists wishing to depict the festive spirit of the city. These days, the regatta is divided into four...

Miró and the fight against Franco’s dictatorship

Miró is, undoubtedly, one of the most important Spanish-born artists, not only for the art that he managed to create throughout his life but also for his way of thinking and how he expressed it in his works. Here, the exhibition ´Miró. His fight against the dictatorship´ presents no less than 113 works that go from engravings, drawings, documents, lithographies and sculptures that the Barcelona-born artist made from 1966 until 1977. In this time Miró based his art, above all, in criticising General Franco and his dictatorship. The works of this exhibition belong to the collector Pere A. Serra, and one of the most important works is a figure in three dimensions that represents the theatre figure ´Mori el Merma´ from the group La Claca in 1977. This creation is a representation of how horrible the regime was. ´Miró. His fight against the dictatorship´ will be presented in the Picasso-Casa Natal Foundation until October 2nd, and it will be commissioned by Dolores Durán and it will be the first exhibition that will reflect Miró´s fight against Franco. One of the most important summaries that they make is the relation between Miró and Alfred Jarry on Ubu. Ubu is a character that appears in different works of Jarry through which Miró identifies the dictator. In 1966 the Spanish artist created the first series of litographies in relation to this dictatorial figure. A book edited by Tériade called ´Ubu Roi´, possesses the text by Jarry and 13 engravings of Miró. Time after, in 1971, the second series was presented, which carried the name ´Ubu as Beléares´, where there are 23 engravings...

15M, outraged and revolution

Things in Spain today are quite difficult. The lack of employment and general social upheaval create disturbing general symptoms. However, with encampments and the organization of the May 15th the people have finally shown to have awakened, there is an urgent need for change in the Spanish political organization, the neoliberal model that once we thought was the solution, turned up not to be that effective. The union of all, peaceful protests and without violence can generate more changes than all the pain caused to the revolutionary political organizations in the past. And the truth is, young people now do not believe in political parties. The party idea has been well behind. The idea of the political party is retrograde, recalcitrant, boring. Every party requires leaders, heads, and mouthpieces. The phenomenon of 15-M and campings everywhere, as well as other protests and revolutions worldwide, demonstrates leadership, it shows that enough is enough, enough leaders, just the same revolutionary impulse absorbing system off and on with its own guidelines. We are now facing the phenomenon of the rhizomatic political organization via Internet. Facebook and Twitter, two of the most abominable creations of cyberspace may, and as we suspect, have not been just another invention to become consumers and producers of information faster and efficiently. They are indispensable tools in today´s political world. Chain letters, invitations to events, fan pages, among others. This is how people,, the mass of young people who seek change are more aware of everything that happens. Recently, the community of Lavapies said no to authoritarianism, no to racism, no to violence. Racism in Spain is really...
