Vermouth is more than a drink in Catalonia. It’s an agreeable custom related to good food and a taste for relaxed conversation between friends. Vermouth means wormwood, which is herbal base of this drink, in addition to other tonic substances that make it pleasant and perfumed and the wine that makes it ideal for cocktails. Red vermouth contains more than forty herbal extracts, among which are flowers, roots and fruit. It is said that its formula is so secret that only four people know it and the actual recipe is stored in a bank safe in Geneva. To make it, the herbs are mixed in a container that is stirred twice a day for two weeks, then sugar and wine are added. Then it is left so that the flavors develop. The quality of the vermouth depends on the wine that is used. The best from abroad are in Italy, but the ones from Catalonia are equally good. It makes a wonderful aperitif for anyone who has a problem with weight, since they contain herbs that produce the sensation of satiety which can decrease appetite. “Going out for a glass of vermouth” was a Catalan custom which was widespread on Sunday at noon after mass ended. While the women prepared lunch, the men ate olives and some snacks while sipping vermouth and commenting on the day. And because of its sweet taste it was also the liquor women preferred for their cocktail hour. Over time the custom began to disappear, Sunday Masses were no longer a family activity and modern life has transformed many of the customs. Today, many...

Alternative rock worldwide could not be in a worse state at the moment. Everything that sounded good on the radio is now just a memory. Back when there was still hope in rock, in its ability to change and the attitude on the radio, we were hit by the wave of musicians like Britney Spears, Rihanna, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga simply because there isn’t any room in major mass media for good rock. In the nineties, the whole scene of indie rock and alternative exploded, and everybody knew about bands that were otherwise probably doomed to oblivion if it hadn’t been for Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, and all the other bands that filled MTV with their “weird” sound during a time period dominated by the less popular hard rock and hair metal. After leaving the nineties, a war that left many dead or wounded and a lot collateral damage, we were sold another false hope: the Strokes. On July 30, 2001, just a few months after the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York, the group released their first album “Is This It,” which sent shockwaves through the rock world. Finally, good rock once again returned to MTV, videos, and daily life. The first release from The Strokes was certainly a hymn to the best of underground rock, a tribute to New York’s role in the sound of the past yet addressing the future. Influenced by The Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop, Television, and the best English Post Punk, Julian Casablancas and his colleagues managed to rattle the world and above all, put...
On July 19, Williamsburg Park, New York, presents the American indie rock band OK Go together with the Russian-born comedian Eugene Mirman. Known for their musical performance and creativity, the band OK Go will give New Yorkers a glimpse of their newest work on this important stage. Ok Go is originally from Chicago but they currently live in Los Angeles. Their uniqueness, their special way of dressing, and their creative music videos have earned them followers. The band was founded in 1998 by lead singer Damian Kulash and bassist Tim Nordwind, who have known each other since they were children in the Interlochen Arts Camp. The later met Andy Duncan in high school and drummer Dan Konopka in college. The band’s name is a joke between Kulash and Nordwind, who took the common phrase of one their teachers: “Ok … Go”. Initially they participated in the public radio program This American Life for the fifth anniversary. In 2002 they released their first self-titled album and the following year they successfully debuted the song, Get Over It, in the UK, reaching number 21 in the singles chart. The song Top of the Pops, was considered the song of the week by Q Magazine. In 2004, they performed the main track for a political benefit album against George W. Bush, produced by Barsuk Records. That year, Kulash wrote a song against Bush that sought to help others fight to unseat Bush from the presidency of the United States. His second album, Oh No, was created in Malmo, Sweden. After the launch, Andy Duncan decided to leave the...
What´s being a solo artist about? Today, it seems that music doesn´t know what making someone fall in love with style and seduction is. All male singers of today know little about true love conquests. On the other hand, however, they know a lot about big cars, bling and little elegance when dressing. Living in the nostalgia of the past, in that past where everything was better, is also not very convenient when it comes to art, music or culture. However, we can´t stop looking back when we see people like Justin Bieber, the current heartthrob for many teenagers around the world. Justin Bieber is simply a caricature of the pop and R&B singer. This sort of androgynous character wants to be one of the Backstreet Boys without being in any band. From the bad quality of his songs to the tediousness of sensitive teenage love with no depth, Justin Bieber is one of the worst products of the current pop music industry. However, youth must not be a reason for despair facing the best contemporary music. Being young or not is not an excuse for having bad taste, on the contrary. If we think about Tony Bennett and his early days, we´ll realise that this master of pop, soul and jazz was involved in art at a very young age and in a much more serious way. Born and raised in New York, Tony Bennett isn´t just a jazz, pop and soul singer but also a very talented painter. His life has been filled with dreams and adventures; as well as singing since a very young age, he was...
It is known that Amsterdam is a city where many musicians have always gone to have fun. Thus, in rock history, Amsterdam, always is remembered for the famous concert by The Doors in September 1968 in which they appeared without Jim Morrison. Was it the new false phase of The Doors after Jim´s death? Not at all. Jim died back in 1970, The chaos in Amsterdam is remembered till date by the band and the fans, being a particularly restless and unforgettable night , and the events that triggered it of course involve drugs and rock n roll. The story goes like this: apparently, The Doors had spent time touring with Canned Heat. During the tour, the fabulous singer of Canned Heat, Bob “The Bear” Hite, gave Jim a piece of hashish, who of course waited for the best time to consume it and kept it in his pocket. When The Doors were about to come to Holland, his manager told him it would be best to get rid of all the drugs they carried. Morrison, faced with this situation, swallowed the piece of hashish “The Bear” had given him in front of the astonished gaze of the other band members. During that evening, before going on stage with The Doors, Jim continued to drink alcohol, especially whiskey. While the time to hit the stage approached, Jim was getting lost further into space and during the performance of Jefferson Airplane, who opened the concert for The Doors, Morrison went on stage to dance and sing with them. He attempted to kiss Grace Slick as she sang, and then went on dancing,...
It was 1961. It was the beginning of a prodigious decade for music and arts. A band from California made up by three brothers, the virtuoso cousin and a high school friend became incredibly famous on the radio (back then, TV didn´t have the power that it has now and the Internet didn´t exist, of course) with a few catchy and happy tunes with neat vocals and wonderfully composed songs. These were the Beach Boys: the brothers Brian, Car and Dennis Wilson, the cousin Mike Love and Al Jardine, who wasn´t from the family. Happy and lively songs, magnificent vocal combinations, guitars and a lot of happiness (plenty of it) came out of the Beach Boys. Their albums soon reached the #1 spot on the charts; they sold like hot cakes and were played at all parties. It was the ´official´ music of the surfers from California, of the girls who dared to wear bikinis, a garment that was popularized by Brigitte Bardot a few years before on the Côte d´Azur. Anyhow, that was an authentic revolution, both in terms of music as in the way of understanding life. Plenty has happened since 1961 and the band has been around the block a few times. The younger Wilson brothers didn´t survive time. To that, they added lawsuits related to royalties, image rights and a long legal etcetera but, incombustible to the dismay of the new sounds, the Beach Boys, now ´boys´ in their 70s, are back with a new world tour and a new album. It´s a studio album, just like they´ve always liked it, called That´s why God...
