Anonymous and the Death of Facebook

Since the appearance of Anonymous on the internet there continuously have been different happenings on the streets, public spaces and social networks. There is no doubt that Anonymous acts as an instrument of the spreading of ideas and suggestions to fight the split political and economical system in which we currently live in. But where is Anonymous? Who is it? What is it about? Many people ask these questions without having an exact answer and there really is no exact answer. Anonymous is first and foremost an idea.  And from there on different networks, branches, events and movements have emerged in reality as well as in the social networks. The biggest obstable for a revolution is the wish to establish itself, creating a new status or system of health and order, trying to overcome risk can reach a stable and sustainable change that reaches everyone indefinitely. Maybe nothing mistaken anymre. And that is why Anonymous has such a great impact in the spreading of protest and activism. Recently there has been somewhat of a debate about the actions that Anoymous has been executing among other participants on the internet. Especially under critique is a web with the titel “What is the plan?” in which it seems that 3 operations for 2011 are presented, the first of these was “Operation Onslaught” on July 30, in which all followers of Anonymous were asked to get information on governing problems in their communities and to make them known on the streets as well as on the internet on this day. However, information about the “original” community of the Anonymous collective was posted...

Tori Amos Concert Rome

Tori Amos is one of the most influential singers of the 90s, and she´s back in Italy on tour presenting her new album ´Night of Hunters´, released in May of this year. She´s one of the most eccentric characters in the world of pre-Lady Gaga pop music, but also a singer of great talent and many instrumental capacities. Her piano, who has been with her since the age of 3, has always been her biggest expressive weapon. Since she was little, at the age of 5,  she became famous in the musical scene of her city (Rockville, Maryland), when in 1968 she managed to get in the Peabody Music Consevatory, who accepted her with a full scholarship. She was the only student accepted there of the age of 5 in the whole history of this conservatory but, a few years later, her scholarship was retracted and Tori Amos was expelled of the school for her “subversive” attitude: she liked rock (at 11 years old she sung Led Zeppelin songs and this was unconceivable in such a strict school). Also, her way of playing was always more instinctive rather than controlled and following the rules and virtuosity. She hated the music sheets, hated discipline and this made her look heretic in her teacher´s eyes. That´s how Tori Amos ended up playing in bars with help from her father, who managed to get her some shows and continuously sent demos of her songs to all record labels in the country, with a near-complete dedication and total faith in his daughter´s talent. He wasn´t wrong. It was on one of these occasions...

Tracing the steps of the Romantic poets in Rome

To understand why there were so many poets, writers, artists and well-to-do people in Rome in the late eighteenth century, we need to look at the concept of the ‘grand tour’. In essence, this largely British, but also to a lesser extent French and German, phenomenon was something between an end of university holiday and a tour of initiation. It was assumed that anyone who wanted to be a gentleman (though there was also the occasional inquisitive lady) had to first take a long trip through Southern Europe. The final destination was Italy, but some travelled as far as Greece or Spain, and the French poet, Chateaubriand, even made it to Jerusalem. The intention of these young travellers was to complete their academic training by visiting the remains of the Roman Empire and seeing for themselves the great works of Renaissance art. They wanted to increase both their knowledge and their strength of character. The trip was long (depending on the debutante’s family, it could be from three months to two years), hard (the trip was made by horse or carriage) and uncomfortable (there wasn’t the basic infrastructure that travellers know today), but it was certainly exciting. Accompanied by a chaperone, these young people venturing into Europe were provided with letters of recommendation for the local nobility, who gladly welcomed these gentlemen and ladies into their sometimes dilapidated palaces. As a result of these trips, books of all kinds were written.  Of all these works, one that stands out in terms of its influence is The Sentimental Journey by Laurence Sterne, published between 1765 and 1768. The book was a vital guide for poets...

The equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius

As the months go by, the escalade of signs preaching a symbolic end of the world seem to have become more undeniable as they prepare the path to the apotheosis of the prophecy of the Mayan year, validated both because of the mysterious and shocking precision of its astronomic observations as for the tendency to shelter in the hidden during these times of crisis and decadence. At least in the Western countries, the financial side is the manifestation of this crisis that seems to affect the citizens more directly. After a shy promise of recovery, the crucial situation to which the posture of the most right-wing sectors of the Republican Party have forced the United States, that nearly declared itself bankrupt at the beginning of last August because of the refusal of the conservatives, with a majority in the Lower House, to pass the budgets for the next year if Obama´s administration didn´t compromise to reduce the social programmes and not increase taxes, caused a new attack by the financial speculators – who despite causing the biggest economic downfall since 1929, carry on operation in the most absolute deregulation and impunity and even imposing their politics to the governments in most part of the world – to the national economies of the most vulnerable countries, that caused a massive dip in the Western stock exchanges and left in evidence once again the possibilities of economic recovery in this part of the world, at least mid-term. Such is the situation that even the least pessimistic analysts say that we´re living the worst moment since 2008 and many are the voices...
