Paris National Opera: Opera Garnier and of the Bastille

The Paris Opera is one of the most famous in the world because it was ordered by Napoleon III in the 19th century and for its immense dimensions which convert it in the biggest theatre in the world.

It works as an opera and a museum and it´s open to the public so that they can see it inside. It has the name of Charles Garnier, the architect of the building who won a competition for its construction among more than 170 competitors and ideas. And that way he went from being an unknown to being the architect who built the great Paris Opera.

In the arrondissement (district) 9 of the city of Paris, the Garnier Opera is part of the National Opera of Paris, together with the Bastille Opera.

On January 15th 1875 it was inaugurated and from that day on it became a symbol of the city, known around the world for the magnificent accoustics that it has.

“The Phantom of the Opera”, the famous novel by Gaston Leroux, uses as the scenario the fantastic building that houses magic, mystery and many myths like the one that says that there´s a lake underneath the building of the Opera.

Another curious story that keeps the soul of the Opera alive is that the night of its inauguration, Charles Garnier had to pay for his ticket like everyone else, and they only gave him a secondary balcony.
