The Piazza della Repubblica of Florence is the biggest in the city and, for that, it´s the centre of many commercial, gastronomical, tourist and cultural activities.
It´s situated in the old part of town and it constitutes and icon of Florence because all the visitors want to go there to have a coffee, eat something nice or simply to enjoy a spring afternoon in the sun.
Like all old buildings, it suffered various modifications and reforms. IN 1870 the square was enlarged and since then it´s like we can see it today: rectangular and 75 metres by 100.
A famous monument of the square that wasn´t demolished when it was being reformed, is a beautiful Roman column that is still exposed in the square today. Above it there´s a statue, “L´Abbondanza” (the abundance) that dates from the 18th century and that is really a relic worthy of being photographed.
But what attracts the tourists the most to this Piazza della Repubblica of Florence are it´s coffee shops, its bars and fine restaurants that offer the best and most exquisite typical Italian dishes.
If you want to get to know this square that has so much to offer, rent apartments in Florence and take your time to see the city, getting lost in its beautiful little streets.
