The Piazzale Michelangelo is very well-known in Florence because from there you can appreciate the city in a unique and panoramic way. It´s up to there where all the tourists of the world go to take that special photo that they´ll always remember.
The Piazzale Michelangelo was an idea and work of Giuseppe Poggi and it was built in the 19th century on the top of a hill to the south of the centre of the historical city.
It carries the name of Michelangelo because the architect and designer of the square admired him a lot and that was how they located in the same terrace various replicas of the great Italian artist. The most famous of all is the replica of David, sculpture that in this case is made out of bronze and in smaller dimensions, while the original one is made out of solid marble.
An interesting fact about the construction of this famous Italian terrace is that all the sculptures that were put there were pulled by 9 pairs of oxes and when it was all finished on June 25th 1873, it looked exactly like it does today.
The panoramic view of the city is really beautiful and unmissable. In the square there´s also a restaurant, located where a museum of Michelangelo was intended to be built originally and that was never materialized.
