The Synagogue on Dohány street

In Budapest there´s the second biggest Jewish synagogue in the world, only surpassed by the one in Jerusalem. And because of that it´s famous not only in Hungary, but also in the whole world.

Thousands of jews and onlookers come here to contemplate the enormous building. The synagogue is 53 metres long and 26 metres wide and it has a capacity for nearly three thousand people. It´s a building worthy of visiting.

Its construction started in 1854 and finished in 1859. It´s of Moorish style, although it has influences from other styles like Romanesque and Gothic.

THe name that the synagogue is known locally is “The Synagogue on Dohány Street” or “The Big Synagogue of Budapest”.

But the history of the synagogue doesn´t end in just its construction and the building but, a few metres of where it lies, during the Second World War there was a ghetto from where all the jews were sent to concentration camps.

Thousands of Jews that were murdered were buried in the cemetery of the great Synagogue which is also close by.

Tou can also see a sculpture outside the place: the Tree of Life. It´s a work which commemorates the murdered during the Holocaust. The tree, a weeping willow, has written in every leaf the name of a murdered jew of that time. It´s hard but worthy of being admired.
