The Tower of Belém is a unique point in the city of Lisbon because it had a fundamental role of the port in the city. Built in 1515, it was a fortress that protected and regulated the ships that came and went through the great port of the city.
Important in the voyages of discovery because it was the starting point and because it was the last thing that the sailors saw of mainland and of their country. As a symbol of Portugal, UNESCO named the Tower of Belém as World Heritage and, for that, it´s visited by thousands of tourists every day.
In charge of the construction was Francisco de Arruda, who built various Manueline architectural works for Portugal and the Tower of Belém is one of the most famous in the world.
The exterior façade of the fortress is peculiar and that makes it a unique monument. Adorned with towers, spheres, ropes cut into stone, a rhinoceros and the cross of the Order of Christ, it defines the style of the artist. Inside the Tower of Belém, we can observe a Gothic style and an extensive lounge that used to be used to store arms, prison and as a collection point.
But the most significative of the tower is the sculpture of Nuestra Señora de la Fiesta de Seguridad, that represents protection and care to those who sailed out to sea was the last image that they saw and they prayed to her for a good voyage.
