In de Waag – “The Weigh House”

De Waag or, in English, “The Weigh House” is an incredible monument in the city of Amsterdam that leaves all the foreigners who visit it with their mouth open. The first stone of the construction was laid in 1488 and there´s a plaque that commemorates it, and so, this building is a city relic.

At that time it used to be part of one of the city´s three gates but, when the city expanded, this function became obsolete and from the 17th century it´s worked as a weighing house. They opened some windows in the building to give it more luminosity and they used to weigh all types of of products there, and the different guilds occupied the place and each had their own space. The blacksmiths on one side, the doctors on the other and so forth.

In the 19th century, the guilds dissolved and the house didn´t have a use once more. They thought of demolishing it but, luckily, this didn´t happen and from that moment it´s used as a home to important people.

Afterwards it was a museum and today it works as a very beautiful restaurant, in de Waag, which remodeled and repaired the whole house so that it´s nice for the tourists.
