Francisco de Zurbarán was one of the most important artists that the city had. Those who want to see his works can do so mostly in the the Museo de Bellas Artes in Sevilla but, also, another of the most important places that the government dedicated to Zurbarán is his own monument, which is visited every year by many art-loving tourists.
This sculpture is a work by the artist Aurelio Cabrera Gallardo, and it was created in 1929, although it´s now in Plaza de los Pilatos and has been since 1950, when it was moved there from Parque de María Luisa.
The pedestal in which the sculpture is on was awarded a prize in the Ibero-American Exhibition and it has four lower carvings of Santa Casilda, La Torre del Oro, Arch of the Macarena and the coat of arms of Fuente de Cantos.
Years ago they stole the brushes and the sword of the statue but, after some time, they were replaced with a donation by the Local Council of the painter´s city.
