The term guiri, as it’s used in Catalonia, refers to the stereotypical foreign tourist, particularly from Northern Europe.
If when on holiday you tend to wear Hawaiian shirts, sandals with socks, shorts and a visor hat; if you walk around holding a giant city map, and carry a photo camera around your neck… then, watch out! You could be a guiri.

In all truth, there’s no escaping it: all tourist become guiris when they arrive in a new city. But don’t worry, the “guiri effect” only lasts a few weeks: as soon as you adapt to the local customs and learn a bit of the language you’ll go unnoticed.
