The DDR Museum is an interactive museum that´s located in the centre of Berlin which, previously, was the part that used to be East Germany that, later on, ended up unifying with West Germany. The place is situated by the River Spree and right opposite the Berliner Dom. The exhibitions that you can see everyday in the DDR Museum are related to trying to show the visitors the way that people used to live at that time in East Germany. For example, in one of the exhibitions, they give the spectator a device to put in their ear which will make them feel like they were constantly vigilated, like it used to happen. The museum was inaugurated on July 15th 2006 like a private museum although private investments are unusual in Germany and the museum, at least most of the time, are funded by the State. Two years after it´s birth, in 2008, the DDR Museum was nominated as one of the most important European museums of the year. The Puerta de Alcalá finds itself in the Plaza de la Independencia in Madrid and it´s one of the main monuments in the city. The original gate, which was situated close to the one that exists today, was built in 1599 for Margaret of Austria, who was the wife of King Felipe III. But 150 years later, when Carlos III occupied the Spanish throne, he wanted to re-design it and the Italian architect Francisco Sabatini was in charge of the project. In 1764 the Puerta de Alcalá was demolished and at that same time the works to build the one that exists now began. The monument occupies a place in the east of the city and it´s in the middle of Alcalá Street, one of the oldest in the whole of Madrid and which starts from the Puerta del Sol and finishes in the town of Alcalá de Henares. There are six statues in the upper part of the gate that decorate it, which were made by the artists Francisco Gutiérrez and Roberto Michel. Also, in the middle of the gate, there´s a plaque which says “REGE CARLO III ANNO MDCCLXXVIII” which commemorates the inauguration date which was headed by King Carlos III. KaDeWe is one of those places and it´s the second biggest in Europe, after Harrods in London. The shopping centre has no less than 60 thousand sq metres where you can undertake different activities like eating in restaurants that range from fast food to specialized foods from all over the country. In KaDeWe there are over 380 thousand items exhibited and, daily, the place attracts no less than between 40 and 50 thousand visitors. One of the most important and controversial museums of recent times is the Jewish Museum in Berlin, which was designed by the architect Daniel Libeskind who thanks to this building became one of the most important architects today. The place was designed with a lot of symbolism and its corridors are dark, gloomy and dramatic that are a reminder of one of the worst moments that the Germany community suffered during the Second World War. The place is located in an area that used to be West Berlin because the project started to be constructed in 1991. The museum has a great magnitude and occupies no less than 15 thousand sq metres, and it´s divided in two parts. The first one is the Kollegienhaus and it´s located in the building that used to house the Supreme Court of the Kingdom of Prussia in the 18th century.
