The Medici Chapel or “Cappelle Medicee” if we say it in Italian, is one of the most beautiful tourist attractives in the Italian city of Florence. It constitutes a part of the Basilica of San Lorenzo in Florence and hence its importance. The chapel contains the crypts with the tumbs of the famous Medici family, but it´s not only that which this church offers but also how it works as a museum for tourists. Donatello, the great artist and sculptor of the Renaissance, is also buried there since the 18th century. There are different chapels inside the main one and each has something special and historical. For example. in the Cappella dei Principi (Princes Chapels), there´s the wonderful mausoleum of the dukes of Medici, buried there in the 17th century. But the tombs are just as important for who is inside of them than for the architectonic and cultural value. Each detail of the mausoleum is a party for the tourists who take thousands of photographs of it. The architect and designer of this church was Buontalenti and this is one of its best art works. If you want to visit this and all the other churches in the city, rent apartments in Florence and enjoy the...

The ABC Museum in Madrid is holding an impressive exhibition of the storyboard of the Japanese filmmaker, Akira Kurosawa until 12 June. Entitled La mirada del samurai: Los dibujos de Akira Kurosawa (The Gaze of the Samurai: The Drawings of Akira Kurosawa) this exhibition provides a view of his complex body of work, which marked an era in international cinema and drew the world’s attention to Japanese culture. The exhibition is comprised of 120 drawings made by Kurosawa that were used for reference during the shooting of Kagemusha, The Shadow Warrior (1980); Ran (1985); Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams (1990); Rhapsody in August (1991); The Sea is Watching (2002) and Not Yet (1993). Akira Kurosawa was born in the Omori district of Tokyo, Japan in 1910. His father’s side of the family were once samurais, but now worked in education and commerce. Kurosawa was passionate about drawing and also cinema, which had only recently arrived in Japan. His first job in the industry was narrating silent films, though this ended when talkies appeared. In 1938 he enrolled as a director’s apprentice in the Toho film studio where he worked with Kajiro Yamamoto. These weren’t easy years for filmmaking in Japan because the government had tight control over productions, ensuring that they adhered to their nationalist agenda. During this period Kurosawa produced films which largely served as propaganda for the militaristic government. However, Kurosawa’s free-thinking tendencies led him to join unions and write impassioned columns in defence of labour rights. This point of view was reflected in his film, No Regrets for Our Youth, which is about the dramatic life of a...

The Piazzale Michelangelo is very well-known in Florence because from there you can appreciate the city in a unique and panoramic way. It´s up to there where all the tourists of the world go to take that special photo that they´ll always remember. The Piazzale Michelangelo was an idea and work of Giuseppe Poggi and it was built in the 19th century on the top of a hill to the south of the centre of the historical city. It carries the name of Michelangelo because the architect and designer of the square admired him a lot and that was how they located in the same terrace various replicas of the great Italian artist. The most famous of all is the replica of David, sculpture that in this case is made out of bronze and in smaller dimensions, while the original one is made out of solid marble. An interesting fact about the construction of this famous Italian terrace is that all the sculptures that were put there were pulled by 9 pairs of oxes and when it was all finished on June 25th 1873, it looked exactly like it does today. The panoramic view of the city is really beautiful and unmissable. In the square there´s also a restaurant, located where a museum of Michelangelo was intended to be built originally and that was never materialized. Enjoying a spring afternoon in the city, seeing it from above, seeing it´s domes and the river is one of the most beautiful things that the tourist will always remember. If you want to visit this square,...
