2015 Oscar Awards

On February 22, the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles will host the 2015 Oscars Awards Ceremony, during which the best films of 2014 will compete for the most coveted prize in international cinema. The nominees include Big Screen favorites such as Oscar winner Meryl Streep and veterans like Clint Eastwood and Robert Duvall, alongside more recent standouts such as Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones and Rosamund Pike. But beyond awards and winners, do you know where they shot the films that are now candidates for sought-after statuettes? We’re going to tell you:

BIRDMAN

Birdman, by Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu and starring Michael Keaton, is mostly set in the city of New York, which is arguably the most filmed city in film history. One of the greatest shots in the film takes place in Times Square, the epicenter of Manhattan, which has of course been privileged to witness some of the most memorable sequences in film history.

ALWAYS ALICE

Without leaving the Big Apple, we are also on location for Still Alice, a drama starring Julianne Moore that follows the footsteps of Dr. Alice Howland in her fight against Alzheimer’s. Not surprisingly, all visitors to the Big Apple at some point start feeling a bit like they’re on the set of a Hollywood production.

GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL

But there is cinematic life beyond New York, and the proof is the other great nomination for the 2015 Oscars: The Grand Budapest Hotel by Wes Anderson and featuring Ralph Fiennes as the protagonist. Despite having the city of Budapest in its title, this production with an outstanding supporting cast was mostly filmed in the German cities of Görlitz, Dresden and the Potsdam Babelsberg studios, just outside of Berlin.

THE THEORY OF EVERYTHING / INTO THE WOODS

la teoria del todo

The British Isles have also served as a backdrop for countless productions throughout the history of the Seventh Art, and in the 2015 edition of the Oscar Awards this includes The Theory of Everything and Into the Woods. The former is an acclaimed biopic about the relationship between the famous astrophysicist Stephen Hawking and his first wife, Jane, which was shot between Cambridge and London. St. John’s College, Cambridge acquires special importance in the film, since it is the place where Hawkings actually studied and met the woman who would become his first wife.

Into the Woods Film

Into the Woods, based on the Broadway musical of the same name, follows the life of a couple of bakers who are childless due to the curse of a witch, portrayed by Meryl Streep. This feature was primarily filmed in Dover Castle, which is located in Kent, in Waverley Abbey and Richmond Park, near London.

TWO DAYS, ONE NIGHT

dos dias una noche

One of the big surprises of the 2015 Oscar Awards is the best actress nomination of Marion Cotillard for her role in Two Days, One Night. This Belgian production by the Dardenne brothers tells the story of a mother who after learning she is going to lose her job decides to visit her colleagues one by one over the weekend in an effort to convince them to help her keep her position. The action of one night took place in Seraing, in the Belgian province of Liège.
