Do you feel somewhat identified with the common story of that travel-savvy couple who got married, had kids, and saw their adventures vanish into thin air? It’s a very common situation, as traveling with kids isn’t easy. It’s not just that you have to carry thrice the luggage, but also the fact that children get bored and tired in most travel-related situations: walking from one end of town to the other, visiting museums with works that mean nothing to them, getting up early to make the most of the day, or listening to the endless explanations of tourist guides.
But not being able to travel with children is only an urban myth, as there are countless places that are perfectly eligible for a family adventure. We believe that exploring with kids in tow can be an even more rewarding way to travel, as experiencing new things is the best way to learn. And so, without further ado, we leave you with our list of ideal destinations for traveling with children so that you have no more excuses. Go on and get packing!
The Netherlands
The flat Dutch landscape makes it ideally suited for cycling trips, with bikes being the typical mode of transport and readily available everywhere, making it a relaxing and fun way for the little ones to get around. Another advantage of Holland and its surrounding regions are the many vast green fields, perfect for family picnics. Some of the towns in the Netherlands look like they’re straight out of the pages of a fairytale, such as the town of Delft. The town of Bruges, a short-train ride away over the Belgian border is another of those towns that look like a children’s book. You can see our family apartments in the Netherlands here.
Iceland
If visiting it in the summertime, this island can be like a paradise in the middle of the ocean. Its mountains are engraved with countless hiking routes and trails for all levels of expertise. And there is nothing more majestic than its three national parks: Vatnajökull National Park, Thingvellir National Park, with endemic species that are unique in the world, and Snaefellsjökull National Park, at the base of a volcano and glacier. Any of these three parks will make for an excellent backdrop to teach the kids to be kind to the environment. And if you travel there during the warm season, you’ll even be able to go whale watching… Moreover, there are many frequent cultural events taking place nation-wide, although most are hosted in Reykjavik. Cantabria
This Spanish region, where we also have apartments, boasts some of the best family activities in all of Spain, as it packs the best of the mountain and the sea in one creative combination. Do you enjoy fishing? You’ll be able to choose between the ocean and one of its many rivers. And if fish are not quite your favorite animal, perhaps you’d like to go see some giraffes… You’ll find them at Cabárceno Nature Park, around the same area where you’ll find other forest adventure activities such as those offered by Forestal Park Santander. And when it comes to Cantabria’s beaches, you’ll find there are plenty to choose from! The beaches of El Sardinero, Oyambre, and La Salvé are some of our top picks.
Paris
Although there’s no doubt Paris is among Europe’s prettiest cities, it is also a big metropolis. Walking its avenues can be exhausting, not to mention its extreme temperatures, and some of its neighborhoods with very steep streets. However, if you’re traveling with kids there’s always one way to make it up to them: Disneyland Paris. No matter how tired they are, we guarantee they’ll forget about it the minute they walk through the doors of the king of theme parks! A well-deserved reward, is it not? Lisbon
The Portuguese capital is full of surprises. In addition to its charming little neighborhoods, it has plenty of monuments and museums that are perfect for families with children. One such place is the Lisbon Oceanarium, where they’ll be able to get hands-on in all sorts of educational activities related to climate change, themed visits, and even a number of programs targeted at families. The Lisbon Zoo is also on our list, with over 2,000 animals and even dolphin shows. And there’s also Kidzania, a city where children step right into the shoes of politicians, policemen or bankers… it’s a lot of fun! So if this is the city of your choice, don’t hesitate to browse through our Lisbon apartments.
