Real Monasterio de la Encarnación

The Real Monasterio de la Encarnación is famous today for the great art collection that it houses in its rooms. It opened its doors in 1611 by order of King Felipe III and Margaret of Austria.

There are many the artists that went through to leave their works and the convent keeps many pictures and sculptures from the years 1600 to 1700, works of great artistic and cultural historical value. Pedro de Mena, González Velázquez and Lucas Jordán are some of the many artists who worked for the Monastery.

The nuns that lived in the convent in that period were Augustinian but the most wondeful thing that is known of this monastery is what the legend says: in one of the rooms of the big monastery you can find the coagulated blood of Saint Pantaleon, that every 28th of July (day of the saint) it liquefies.
