São Carlos Theatre is the house of the great Opera of Lisbon. Its construction took place in the 18th century, after the original Opera House in the city (located on Commerce Square) was destroyed by a strong earthquake that, sadly, destroyed many old buildings in the city.
The new Opera House of Lisbon, of neoclassic style, is located on Serpa Pinto street. Its façade is very striking and characteristic because it simulates a fortress rather than a theatre and its walls are strong, thick and resistant so that they can still stand if another earthquake hits the city.
In its interior, São Carlos Theatre looks a lot like the St Carlo Theatre in Naples. It presents five galleries and it´s all decorated in neoclassic and rococo style.
A few years ago they installed a restaurant on the outside of the theatre where people can go and enjoy delicious dishes before going into the opera to see the famous plays that are being premiered.
If you want to visit this magnificent theatre in the city, get Lisbon accommodation look smart and go and see it.
