GLOBAL SHORT RENTALS

Hollandsche Schouwburg

Hollandsche Schouwburg is a famous theatre in Amsterdam that hasn´t got as much artistic history as a tragic one. The “Dutch Theatre” was inaugurated for the first time at the end of the 19th century and it worked as a theatre until 1941 when the nazis took it over and converted it into an exclusive theatre for jews.

The best plays were recreated in this theatre in the centre of the city of Amsterdam. Famous artists of the time came to sing or play and every performance day, the theatre was full, given the good reputation that it gave to go there. Nobody imagined what would happen after.

That way, the jews that went to that theatre were marked, recruited and taken to concentration camps. That´s why the history of this theatre is so cold and sad.

Today, in the same place, there´s a monument to all those murdered jews. In one of the rooms, above its walls, there are 6700 names of Jewish families that represent the 104 thousand Dutch jews that were killed during the Second World War.

It´s a place you must visit in the city, an unmissable memorial that although it fills you with pain, also exemplifies what cannot happen ever again.
