Avenida da Liberdade

The Avenida da Liberdade was created by the Marqués de Pombal in 1755, after a great earthquake that destroyed the city. Despite the name that they gave the Avenue “of Liberty”, it was covered by thick walls and the common citizens didn´t have access to it. Only the high society of Lisbon, politicians and intellectuals, walked through it.

Subsequently, in 1821, the liberals took the power of Portugal and knocked down the walls so that everyone had access and could walk down the Avenida da Liberdade.
With a similar style to the Champs Elysées of Paris, it was built on that example and, today, is one of the most famous commercial avenues in Portugal. There you can find the best and most exclusive brands. But it´s also used for parades and other festivities of the country.

Also, on its street there´s a monument in the honour of the fallen in the First World War. For that it´s not only a commercial avenue but it also forms part of the history of the country and you should visit it if you can find Lisbon accommodation and you´re in the city.
