The Scuola Grande di San Rocco was built in the 15th century and served as a precinct to treat and assist the people in the times of the plague. San Rocco from then became a devote of the citizens of Venice and, later, he was declared patron of the city. On August the 16th they celebrate the day of the saint and, every year, a crowd marches from the cathedral to the Church of San Rocco that finds itself next to the School.
Tintoretto was in charge of the decoration of the building who, in the 16th century, painted all the walls and ceilings of the school. Some of the works that are famous today in the whole world and that no tourist can miss are: “Annunciation and San Rocco presented to the Pope” and “San Rocco curing one of the victims of the plague”.
The church, which is located at a side of the school that also has the name of the patron of the city, is an architectonic work of great value and that is visited today by thousands of tourists.
The façade was modified various times in the successive restorations, so it has various architectonic styles. Also in the interior of this church there are works by Tintoretto. The paintings, above all, talk about the life and work of San Rocco.
